Even so, there's really not a lot we can gain by betting on that river with just eights.
If we had an overpair, or even just top pair, I'd say fair enough. We can get called by lower pairs, worse kickers... there's some value to be had. When we bet a hand as marginal as third pair though, one of three will happen:
1 - Everybody folds and we take the 70c in the pot.
2 - We get called, and the caller almost certainly has a better hand. We've lost 22c more than if we'd just checked.
3 - We get raised, and we're forced to fold ourselves because really, what can we beat other than a naked bluff? Again, we've lost 22c more than if we'd just checked.
The thing about outcome 1 is our hand is so marginal that if everyone folds, we don't make any more money and
were probably going to win at showdown anyway - there's a chance we'll fold out some weak nines or queens, but for that small amount I think they call us more often than not (especially at this level).
We stand to win the same amount without risking outcomes 2 or 3 by just checking behind.
