pokerstars - $0.02 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 5 players
BB: $2.00
UTG: $4.99
Hero (CO): $2.03
BTN: $2.00
SB: $2.10

SB posts SB $0.01, BB posts BB $0.02

Pre Flop: ($0.03) Hero has [8d] [9d]
fold, Hero raises to $0.08, BTN calls $0.08, fold, fold

Flop: ($0.19, 2 players) [9s] [Js] [2d]
Hero bets $0.14, BTN raises to $0.40, Hero?

BTN just got in the table and mucked in both hands in the blinds. Note that he has auto-rebuy and a full stack starting this hand.

I get second pair and a backdoor straight draw and he takes a lot of time before raising. I've seen this with two pairs and over. If he is semi-bluffing, it would be the second time I'd see that in 2NL as most aggro fish with a flush draw would shove with [7s] [5s] or [Jd] [4c] here.

But I don't know if he is a aggro fish or something else. I'm not sure what is the best line here.

I think it should be a fold, not much reason to believe it is a bluff and most likely you will not be confident with your hand on the turn or river. If you had a really good read on villain bluffing 3betting is the only option because so many cards will make the hand more difficult to play on the turn and river than it already is. Even your' backdoor straight will leave you at the dummy end of it.

watchtowel said it all, the guy more than likely has you beat or will by the river so just fold and avoid another marginal situation that we dont need to get involved in, yes sometimes he will be bluffing (or some guys will bluff) But so much more often this is a top pair hand or a draw and our backdoor to the idiot end of a straight really isnt worth anything.

Best thing to do in the micros is believe people, as on a whole they play very straightforwardly.

Well... I folded... I didn't feel at all confortable with that raise.

I marked the hand for review because of the time he took to make the raise and because I felt I couldn't do anything about it but maybe there was something. My gut feeling (none related to hand reading btw) was that he had FD + overcards, or FD + top pair.

Fold. You're barely ahead or you're crushed.

I agree with the others this looks like a pretty standard fold.
