PartyGaming - $0.02 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 6 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

CO: 30.5 BB (VPIP: 59.09, PFR: 18.18, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, hands: 22)
BTN: 220 BB (VPIP: 19.51, PFR: 19.51, 3Bet Preflop: 3.85, Hands: 84)
SB: 112.5 BB (VPIP: 29.63, PFR: 7.41, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 84)
Hero (BB): 154 BB
UTG: 159.5 BB (VPIP: 13.75, PFR: 7.50, 3Bet Preflop: 6.06, Hands: 83)
MP: 103.5 BB (VPIP: 27.83, PFR: 8.77, 3Bet Preflop: 2.94, Hands: 116)

SB posts SB 0.5 BB, Hero posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 1.5 BB) Hero has 8♣ 9♣

UTG calls 1 BB, fold, CO calls 1 BB, BTN raises to 5 BB, fold, Hero calls 4 BB, fold, CO calls 4 BB

BTN had been raising his button very consistently, adjusting the size to the number of limpers in front of him. He also had been very aggressive post-flop. I figured 89s was good enough to get involved with but not to re-raise with.

Flop: (16.5 BB, 3 players) J♣ 7♣ Q♣
Hero checks, CO checks, BTN checks

Seeing as the hand played out I am kicking myself for slow-playing here but considering BTN's aggressiveness I thought it a good idea at the time :)

Turn: (16.5 BB, 3 players) J♠
Hero bets 8 BB, fold, BTN calls 8 BB

River: (32.5 BB, 2 players) Q♥
Hero bets 15.5 BB, BTN calls 15.5 BB

Hero shows 8♣ 9♣ (Flush, Queen High) (Pre 36%, Flop 98%, Turn 80%)
BTN shows T♦ J♦ (Full House, Jacks full of Queens) (Pre 64%, Flop 2%, Turn 20%)
BTN wins 60.5 BB

I guess after the turn there wasn't any other way this hand was going to play out. My questions are mostly a) should I have played this hand at all and b) should I have bet the flop?

Thanks!

Erik

a) Questionable, you are OOP and as you have seen it is a problem sometimes. Ideally you want to be IP vs multiple people with such hand.
b) I like to check raise here (some people spazz out but even if they just call my work is done; if they fold, oh well, not like they would bet the turn unimproved) but donking is an option too.

Bet the turn larger. Check/fold the river.

I'm betting 13-14ish bbs on turn, and check folding this river as played...

That being said, I'm likely folding pre here OOP

I think its unlucky... 89 suited isn't terrible defend from big blind....and in micros you will get paid more often than not with worse

You had to bet on the flop. I mean you never have to let the opponents to make flush with higher card or to make a full house like in this case. In situations like that you should always bet because there are more possibilities to be dealt another card in the same color and somebody else of your opponents to make better flush than yours. It's better to not let them to see the other two cards because if you let them to see the other two cards than you have more chances to lose the pot.

I agree with this. It always seems to be a bad idea to slow play a flush. Personally, especially since it's 6 max, I don't see it as a bad defend... and when you did wasn't this almost exactly the type of flop you wanted? Sure you were unlucky but you did bring some of that on yourself by letting him run you down.
