Scarey board on the flop: Better hands will fold

checking river.. I guess this is the spot where good players would raise me and put me in a tough spot but I got away with it.

Why do you think the turn is a great barrel card?

I think you played this hand OK, but some of your reasoning is a bit off imho. 1) The turn card isn't a great barrel card. Pairing the top card on board doesn't really change anything for you. 2) I'd bet the flop / turn against this kind of opponent, but not with the expectation of them folding better, because this isn't the kind of opponent that looks like they'd do this. I'd do it mostly for value because I think they'll still call with worse. 3) The river I'd check fold because they are passive and the Ax hits a good chunk of their worse range I expect them to call with (AT/AJ).

John what if we bet to protect our hand? Is that a good enough reason? Try and end it before our villain catches up?

That's value betting.

Betting, just to make an opponent fold a worse hand that might out draw us isn't good practice, especially if he's never going to call with that worse hand but may use it to bluff with if we check to him.

Nice hand this in the end - pretty ballsy play. Don't know why villain still keeps chasing - the gutshot such a bad draw to chase especially to a double barrel. The river check was a relief in the end - phew !! :):p
