First thing I want to say is buy in for the full amount. People playing at 2NL are so bad that you are losing a ridiculous amount of value by not having them covered.

Hand 1. Played fine
Hand 2. If you had bought in for 100bb you could call but so short folding is right imo
Hand 3. Preflop you should raise to about 20c then I imagine youd have to call off a shove? Dont like flatting here but dont like playing a 40bb stack in general. Im not sure about sizing of the check raise either. I raising to only $0.25 is better because I think it would give villain the impression he might have some fold equity so might be more inclined to shove with flush draws and even lower aces. I dont think its a huge deal but in general all 3 hands were played decently well.

As mentioned, in cash games buy in for 100bb or play a proper short stack strategy. Playing with 40bb means when you do hit a good hand the most you can win heads up is 40bb.
In hand 2 what sort of hand are you trying to hit with Q9 other than a straight? tptk is likely to be dominated a ton of the time by AQ QK QJ Q10 all in the range of the people in before you.
As it happens you get a decent flop and then 1 don't bet it and 2 fold to a 3/4 pot bet when you still have some small implied odds to call.
What is AK going to do if you bet into this wet board? Aggressive play wins money.
This is where the short stack hurts you because your implied odds shrink when you have nothing behind so drawing becomes almost fruitless.,,, In fact your fold is correct with your stack size which is why you don't play this hand here with 40bb.
40bb stack play revolves around getting your money in pre or on the flop with premium cards.

If you're just learning, I can see buying in short to protect yourself. I leave the table and rathole when I get over 250 bbs at Zoom because I don't trust myself that deep, but get used to 100 bbs, and use it.

Especially for hand #2. That's a snap fold for me at Zoom, even with 100 bbs. At a regular cash table it might be different because of player reads, but at Zoom and only 40 bbs deep you don't have the implied odds to get enough value for a hand like Q9o. That hand is going to miss so often that you need much deeper effective stack sizes to make it pay off enough to cover all the times it's going to miss.

Thanks for all your feedback. I think it is very psychological as to why I buy in the minimum. I sm still learning and I for some reason am more comfortable with tournament play than cash games for the Same reasons...money vs chips... the money draining down the open pipe and unable to call of any shoves even though I have the overpair or any high bets with my BR being very small.. I agree I will have max value for my hands with 100bb.. Hope I reach there soon.

How many BIs do you have for 2NL? If you have over 15 (So $30) Id say you were perfectly well bankrolled to buy in for 100bb. If not maybe just deposit a little more? The sole fact that you have an account on this site and are trying to improve makes you better than about 80% of 2NL players and you should be able to beat it sooner rather than later if youre not already. Buying in for 100bb will improve your game a lot quicker in my opinion than 40bb as the game becomes more complex the deeper you go. If you really are uncomfortable at cash games then I recommend playing some STT for like $0.50 buy in just to improve your game before making the switch over to cash. I played STTs for about 6 months after Id learnt the basic strategies before I felt confident enough to play cash. Also, if you havent already Id recommend watching the free videos on youtube from gripsed. Hes really great for beginner to intermediate players! Good luck!
