Should I play otherwise? He was doing some really weird stuff in the first few hands so I figured I'd let him bet on the river instead of betting myself.

on the first hand everything is fine, there was no way to check whether he had a set with such a short stack as his ... the end was predetermined, you would still be all-in:)
on the second hand, I think he hooked on the king and shoved everything)) set would not have played on such a dry board!

he raise 2x before w/ small pair, so 4x could be big pairs & AQ+?

isnt it better to just call pre?

First hand looks fine to me.
It's never good news when a potential full house appears on the turn and you have a flush, but the villain has many other possible hands here. The 4-bet is more bad news, but pot odds dictate a call.

Second hand, great raise pre-flop against a calling station.
You need ~ 38% equity to call the flop.
The size of the flop bet seems bluffy.
In the first hand, villain made a small bet on the river with a monster hand, to reduce your chances of folding. So he doesn't always think "Big hand, big bet". If he has a big hand here, why is he maximizing the chance that you will fold?
BUT:
- Villain could have Kx. Your pre-flop raise puts a lot of Ax hands in your range. Villain could be afraid of an A on future streets, so he is protecting his hand.
- We have no evidence that villain is hyper-aggressive, his PFR is normal for 6-max.
- Villain clearly is not a solid player, maybe he just felt like pushing some chips around with a big hand.

I'd fold.
