Only 10 hands on UTG+1, so no reads on him. I have seen some people play high pockets very tricky, so I opted to just call his bets to try to keep the pot smallish. You like this or should I have raised??? I dont see too many people betting draws, so Im not really worried of him hitting straight/flush. Im thinking he has a PP aswell and I figure if I raise I scare him off and if I just call he might continue firing, like he did. Is this sort of like a wa/wb scenario?

Without reads this is fine. It's cost you $3 to get to showdown with a hand that has some value. He's led half pot the whole way so could have a decent hand himself. At this level some guys like to minraise monsters in early position. I've seen AK played like this too so it just depends.

Just as a side note, I like to watch a table for an orbit or two to see what I'm getting involved in and not sitting down cold. That's helped me quite a bit.

I had been sitting at the table for ~40 hands, he had just sat down

I dunno; he's really fading away with those lead bets. I'm not sure whether that means he's losing steam but thinks he needs to keep betting, or whether that's a mathematical relationship between streets he thinks is valid for something. If he had a set or two pair, you'd think he'd keep the pressure up.

My preference would have been to repop the flop. To me, his bet says he paired the eight, likely with an Ace, or, has the flush draw and wants to block you from betting him out of the draw. If you want to let him keep drawing with it, I guess you can just call, but I'd try to take it down on the flop.

His shrinking bet on the river indicates it wasn't an eight, maybe as weak as a paired 4? Or, he thinks he needs to keep his bet progression.

Line looks fine to me; this is usually unimproved overcards/FD or a smaller pair that's getting scared of the board and wants a cheap showdown.

My preference would have been to repop the flop.

This is pretty much a WA/WB thing, and if you read that thread you know raising is much worse than smooth calling. All we're doing with a raise is giving him money when he holds a hand that beats us, and most probably chasing out smaller hands that are testing the waters with the donk bet on the flop.

I was actually thinking of dbitel's video/thread about this while this hand was playing out, lol.

I like it the whole way. If he has an 8 or a higher PP so be it, but not raising the flop or turn you saved money for sure if that's the case. You made it relatively cheaply to showdown which is the goal with unimproved PP's. Absolutely spotless in my opinion.

Yeah, on top of which at this level reraise rarely gets someone to fold anyways; in other words it's like a minraise preflop and builds the pot rather than defining the hand. I 3-bet the flop last night with bottom 2 pair but still got called by TP and the runner-runner pair counterfeited me. :/

And, thanks for pointing out the WA/WB; it only pops in my mind when the pairs are big.
