Hero bets $3.56, MP calls $3.56

Hero bets $6.94, MP calls $6.94

River: ($28.50, 2 players) J♥
Hero bets $13.54, fold

$0.24 was deducted from the pot for the jackpot.

I'm wondering if check calling the river would have been better with the missed draws? or if there was any value to be betting on the river in the first place.

The greedy answer would be to setup the check raise on the river. However your hand wasn't particularly strong and in the unlikely event your opponent is slow rolling the nuts you will lose huge when your opponent reraises your check raise. Most of the situations your opponent would simply check your check ( missed draw, weak made hand). The only time you get paid off is if your opponent bluffs the river. So clearly playing the hand straight forward and not trying to get greedy is the best play there.
