$5 NLHE Full Ring: Why do I get myself into these spots?

Villian Stats (VPIP/PFR/AF): 11/10/40

full tilt poker $0.02/$0.05 No Limit Hold'em - 9 players - View hand 1033502
DeucesCracked Poker Videos Hand History Converter

UTG: $6.24
Hero (UTG+1): $5.00
UTG+2: $5.21
MP1: $6.07
MP2: $9.89
CO: $6.23
BTN: $3.40
SB: $5.31
BB: $4.63

Pre Flop: ($0.07) Hero is UTG+1 with J T
1 fold, Hero calls $0.05, 4 folds, BTN calls $0.05, SB raises to $0.30, 1 fold, Hero calls $0.25, 1 fold

Flop: ($0.70) A 9 K (2 players)
SB bets $0.40, Hero calls $0.40

Turn: ($1.50) 8 (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $0.85, SB calls $0.85

River: ($3.20) 9 (2 players)
SB checks, Hero checks

Is the answer that I should just not be limping? Is the bet on the turn terrible? I find myself in these situations too often I think. I seem to miss pretty much every draw I ever have.

Fold pre, and definitely fold to his hefty raise. You're out of position with a hand that can get you into a lot of trouble. If the flop comes J73r, will you lay your hand down when he turns up the heat? This guy is a tight player. When you see a guy like this at micro stakes, he's usually got the goods.

I think your bet on the turn is fine, you still have a ton of outs, and there is the slight chance that he hates the flop(TT-QQ).

But in short, just fold pre next time.

JTs really shouldn't be in your EP range at all but if you want to play it raise. Limp calling it is really bad imo. As played, I shove on the river if SB is remotely capable of folding.

I hate bluffing on the river if he can read boards at all because we can now get called by any Ax

I agree with wvhillbilly. don't play TJ early position.

that being said, what's done is done.

On the flop, i would honestly reraise and 4-bet with that hand since you got monstrous draws. You have very good showdown equities against many range of his hand. Even against a set of Aces, your equity is 2:1 underdog. Any other hand, your hand is very great on the flop. Not only do you have good showdown, you got good fold equity too. Turn bet was fine. Standard float and taking it down on the turn. If you feel that villain is capable of folding and you got history of him, I would shove on the river as wv said.

You think he ch/calls turn and river with his TP hands?

TPWK possibly, yes.

Looking back, I don't mind betting river so much, but not completely keen on it. I should probs learn to read boards in posts better myself :)

Yeah don't limp/play it but as played raise the flop and raise it big. You're basically coin flipping against top pair, 2 pairs and with some fold equity it should be a profitable play.

Don't bluff shove river as someone suggested, that is spew. Nits don't fold anything after they give this much action, unless they're extremely weak tight.

Question: since we have ~0% chance of winning this pot at showdown, how often would we need a fold for a shove to be +EV? We have about a pot-sized bet left, so we need a fold 50% of the time, right? Or would it be 33%.

We hafve $3.45 left, but let's say we have exactly the pot for simplicity. If we shove $3.20 into $3.20 we'll win $3.20 every time he folds, and lose $3.20 every time he calls, so it's exactly 50-50%. You're never going to get that FE though, not even 10% imo.
