Tough spot because the hearts missed and he could have been on the FD but I doubt he has worse often enough to make calling profitable. Not sure I would have but looking at the way the hand played out I think I like betting the turn smallish (~$1.35) to charge the FD and so I can play the river a little more easily because I don't think most villains bet the river if they call the turn and miss.

I know this is the question everyone asks, but why no 3bet pre? Also, why did you check the turn?
Not that there wasn't good reasoning for either.

Caveat up front, I AM A FISH!

This screams to me that villain has at least TT, and has first tested against the queen, and now has filled his straight, or maybe he is sitting on a set. Had u fired a 2nd bullet on the turn it would have given you valuable info.

I go broke so often in this situation (tptk) and I should know better................

Every post I put on here seems to be "3 Bet Pre". Maybe I need to factor that into my game more, but I figured, having position on him, I would be better off taking it street by street. I agree betting the turn perhaps would have been better in hindsight, but it was a scary card or so it seemed at the time and after he calls my flop 3 bet, AQ doesnt look as strong any more so evaluating on the river in position seemed ideal.

Are we agreeing a fold is generally more profitable here? I think after I 3 bet the flop he must know I have a hand I can call with, so is he overbetting because he hit his straight and thought he could get the value?

Err, on the flop...

"Flop: ($0.75) 9
heart.gif
, 8
spade.gif
, Q
heart.gif
(2 players)
MP2 bets $0.40, Hero raises to $1.10, MP2 calls $0.70"

I ought to state that I'm not too good at cash, usually play MTTs but with my new shifts at work, don't really have the time to put in on weekdays, so trying to play cash a bit but walking into a few hands I'm struggling with.

He's obviously got his terminology confused, it's actually pretty common for people to think any raise is a 3bet. It's not of course but calling the raise the wrong thing doesn't change the action or the analysis.

As for preflop I 3bet AQ here just about 0% because it plays well in position against a standard MP opening range but it seriously sucks ass if our 3bet get called/raised. If I want to bluff 3bet I'll choose a hand that generally sucks postflop, that's not AQ.

Fair play, I thought re raising was a 3 bet and re raising that re raise was a 4 bet. My mistake.

Reraising is a 3bet. Your confusion probably comes from how it's called preflop. Preflop the blinds posting is the 1st bet, a raise is the 2nd, and a reraise is the 3rd. Postflop the 1st bet is not a raise, just a bet. So the raise (like your bet on the flo in the OP) is the 2nd bet of the round, not the 3rd.

pre: BB is 1st bet, raise is 2nd, and reraise is 3 bet
post flop: bet is 1st bet, raise is 2nd, reraise is 3 bet

Cheers, make myself look a donk! Not as bad as when I used to think 3 betting meant triple barrelling...
