should i raise bigger preflop? i bet flop and turn to get value from worse hands but his raise on the river troubles me a lot by the way he played his hand. i was 50/50 to to fold or call what would you do in that spot?

As you played it, it was fine I think. I would probably call here. You only have 5 hands on villain and while it looks like he wants a call on the river, there are enough conceivable hands he could have that you have beat. He could have hit some piece of the flop, hoping for the final flush card as well, thus the thin value bet on the end.

If you come accross this again (new player at table), you can check the turn and keep the pot small, especially since you have a marginal AJ in your hand. You can then call the river and get some info on your new friend.

Looks like a blocker bet. It sucks because it would be better to bet slightly more on the river, but w/o info a raise isn't really good. But any ways, it's a pretty easy call. If he flopped it, and was at all competent, he'd be betting bigger on the river. Not saying he still couldn't have a flush, but I think you're looking at Ax and Qx by a much wider margin.

Considering the pot odds, you'd have to be pretty confident he has you beat to fold. Factor in that a fair number of players wouldn't have been able to resist check-raising their flopped flush, and it's not that hard a decision.

I don't like the bet on the turn.... checking behind getting another card for free isn't all that bad.

And it keeps the hands we beat in the hand.

Opens up for a bluff on the river as well :)

Opponent checking the turn and raising quite low on the river??? It's a weird line he's playing.

From his POV your range is pretty strong to raise pre and fire two barrels. If he had some kind of draw plus pair he SHOULD just try to check it down. So my questions in that hand are:

Does he realize how strong my hand looks?

Does he over value hands like AX?

Does he use weird aggressive lines on later streets after hes shown alot of passivity.

If you cannot answer the questions for the specific player, you then think about how most players in his position play that are unknown to you. If there is a decent chunk whos answers are no, yes, yes...... then you probably need to call for the odds. Does that make sense?
