after the bet on the turn card my my pot odds were 10.7:1 and the odds of hitting the Q to complete the straight were 10.6:1. So over the long run this is a break even bet. but, with the implied odds i guess the pot odds were a little better. How often should I use Implied odds??? Should I have called on the turn?

Cap it pre, call the turn with 3-10 pretty decent outs.

is that my mistake... not capping it preflop? When should I apply implied odds?

Well I suck at LHE and I tend to cap 100% of my preflop range. :D But surely AKs should be an auto-cap.

It builds a bigger pot with a dominating hand and also it gives you better odds to chase and realize your equity on later streets!

Implied odds refer to situations where you don't have direct odds to call with a draw but your draw is a pretty nutty one and you will make enough on the times that you hit to make it profitable. Really, it's more of a NL concept than in limit. A good example would be where someone's range is so strong/depolarized (like a nit who raises 3% of hands and can't fold postflop) and you flop an open-ender.
You can often take a card off even if you aren't getting immediate odds (your odds of hitting an OESD on turn is about 18%) because you will definitely get paid off by his overpair when you make it.

Reverse-implied odds would come into play when you have a hand like 98 on this board where you have no realistic odds of winning by hitting a 9 or 8 and a J could cost you money because you won't be able to fold a straight.
