Hello comrades, just had a question for the masses today. So I got a terrible beat last night and almost smashed my mouse :p sometimes I handle my beats well other times.... well not to much. Just curious what method do you guys use to combat your bad beats in order to continue playing stress free. No matter how much I try to not let it bother me.... sometimes its too much :O

It's really hard sometimes. What helps me is that no matter what the beat is, I have been on the other side before.

So, a guy who should not have been in the hand got lucky and hit gold with 2 rags.

So have I.

A guy sucks out and kills me when I have had the nuts on the flop.

So have I.

A guy bluffs me and shows it. And It was a pot I really could not afford to lose and will probably cost me the game.

So have I.

No matter what the beat, you always remember the beat and forget that chances are you have done the exact same thing to someone!

I just watched a WPT paris event. One guy raised UTG w J-2 as a steal. The short stack w ace-rag shoved. The guy w J-2 could not call, it was 1/2 his stack if he lost. Guess what? Not only did call with J-2, he spiked a deuce on the river and took out the other guy. It had to hurt. Everyone at the table knew it was BS. The announcers knew it was BS. Even Mike Sexton, who was playing, his job as annoncer filled in by Phil Hellmuth, stopped over to the booth and said "I am glad I am not up here, because I would have no idea what to say about that last hand". Needless to say what Phil said about it.

You know what the guy who lost did? Shrugged it off, looked like a classy guy and said not one word about this horrible beat that ended his game. He might have later put a hole in a wall, but I doubt it. In the end, what can you do? Getting mad will weaken you.

So just laugh it off. Realize you have done it before. Know that getting mad will only weaken the rest of your game. And remember class acts like Doyle Brunson and others who take it all in stride. :willy:

That is a pretty good way to describe Tony G, lol. Spot on, matter of fact.

Phil Hellmuth is a horrible loser. Why is obvious; he always thinks the hand that beat him would be played differently by him and so therefore he should not have lost to that hand! How stupid is that?

I am a fan of the guy, but I keep hoping the day will come he realizes that he is not ever going to be able to play against himself, lol.

It's hard situation when you got bad beat. I always take a break and I try to forgot about that quickly how it is possible. Sometimes I don't play almost all day long. Sometimes I watch others bad beats on youtube.

Sometimes you get bad beat and sometimes you bad beat someone. The bad beats that piss me off the most are like me QJ villain J6 , Q rag rag no 6 and no flush draw. I Check he bets I push he calls it comes runner runner Flush. And this is at the FT and i go out 5th.
I guess i could of pushed on flop but I wanted his chips and he was on Button and I was BB.
Lesson is sometimes when you trap you get bad beat.

my solution:

quit table as quickly as possible....bad beats leads tilt, and tilt leads poor play, poor play leads bad beats and tilt, and worse and worst.....like snowball....

have no good solution, just quit , and if want to play, play playmoney, whatever push ATC......LOL

Read a book called The Poker Mindset, it helped me understand and cope with the bad beats. Also keep a note of all the suck outs in your favour, there will be plenty.
In my last tournament I put bad beats on two players and lost the heads up by a minor one. You must accept them as part of the games flow.
Note who the player who beat you was because he probably plays bad and look for him and isolate him in future hands.:joyman:

I think its just a matter of experience. Bad beats used to really bother me. I used to get so mad and think about them, especially if they were deep in tourneys.

Lately ive noticed that i just have taken so many thousands in my lifetime that i dont even blink an eye anymore. They are expected and are as common as drinking a glass of water.

Getting mad is not going to make you win the hand.Whats done is done. Forget about it instantly and keep working. It 's like a routine. Keep doing the right thing and if the result is not what you wanted, just forget about it and try again.

I can honestly say that i rarely tilt anymore. Especially when playing cash. Unless i've lost like 5 or more buy ins where ill just switch it off and say to myself: Pick it up tomorrow.

p.s: expect less ,get more.

This

With experience, they hurt less and less. It just happens.

I just forget about the hand, and I will not let it change the way I play.

Few weeks ago I put a note on my computer. It said, "I'm a fair to good player, good players accept bad beats." Something I learned a long time ago about things in life, I don't have to like it, but I must accept it or be miserable all the time.

As stated above...read the poker mindset..i read it even though i had a strong concept on how to avoid tilt and staying in the right mindframe...this book helped me ensure that without that correct positive attitude and focus.. eventually i may lose it all....wonderful book and i def recommend it.

Keep in mind tho...if you have anger or depression issues....there will be times where poker will maximize those episodes due to bad beats...tilt...downswings...general chat bullies...being card dead..boredom...even other real life isues that are stuck in your mind

Get your mind right before ever sittin at the table if you plan on serious play

Just my 2 cents....keep grindin and good luck

How many people beat them self in the face after a bad beat? am i the only one? I must discipline myself. Okay in all seriousness after a bad beat i look at my bank roll to see what percentage I've lost. Most of the time it's not to much. I continue to fight though the pain and just keep the thought in my head that once i win a hand ill feel a little better.

They're bound to happen whether they are for or against you. Why let it get inside your head? No good can result from that.

Good your question! when I go wrong on tables or in life I take refuge in my family to my girlfriend and my friends who are always! Granted it's hard to get you the anger when it lost a lot of money in poker! When I am very stressed and I smoke a cigarette I take a shower it relaxes me!

I usually go sit at a micro table and start playing 70% of hands and try and put a bad beat on someone else. I don't know why, but it feels good and for the $10 or $15 i may spend it sure makes me feel better when i do bink. It also serves as double bonus. When that player sees me again, he's going to think I'm a donk and i'll be able to stack him off with AA
I think it's just part of poker. It's going to happen. My worst one was probably losing with quads to a str8 flush. Super sick. If you want to see the worst beat on tv, google "quads over quads" Uber sickness. Flop a boat and drawing dead. River quads and get stacked off.

I handle bad beats well, because I know you know being @ my table is a bad beat. Lol jkjk. It's rough out there sometimes. You just have to put in enough volume, and it will even its self out.

LOL, That's the exact same thing I do. It seems to help watching other bad beats for some reason. And, if I'm angry from the beat, I have to just quit playing for awhile, because I will not be able to think clearly and I'll make horrible decisions so there is really no point in playing.
