Strange title for a post, but hear me out ok.
You come home from work, if single grab a quick bite to eat then sit down to spend the next few hours propped infront of your screen for a few hours fun of poker.
If marriead, see to family first then do the same.
Poblem is what starts off as a recreational passtime soon turns into a full time addiction where every spare free moment is spent infront of the screen.
Your life changes, you stop seeing freind and family, you don't eat propperly you don't exercise and spend loner and longer time every evening, sometimes into the early hours of the morning playing then realise you should be at work in a couple of hours.
If this is you, then you should probably think about taking a break.

This was my lifestyle until about 3 years ago. My boss noticed first that I was not doing my job propperly, my eyes were gritty every morning from lack of sleep and basically was a mess.
I made a post not so long ago about folding AA in BB. Funny thing is though, that started a roll, from an inital 3-4 deposits on different sites amounting to $120 total I had a year of wins, final tables tons of top 3 finishes in S&G's and was up to 3K in winnings. All I could do is live eat and sleep poker taking every moment just to talk about poker. By the end of the year I still had a couple of thou in the sites. Then the rot set in, I lost every dollar not thru the casino or cash games, simply sticking to tourneys and S&G's. Within 3 month I had lost it all.

One of my friends saw the mess I was in, saw the dark circles under my eyes etc etc and simply said, next weekend you are comming out with us, DON'T ARGUE. What could I say?.
They took me mountain walking lol. Half way up I thought I was going to die I was so out of breath and thought of quitting, but had wanted to go to the top of this mountain for the last 25 years so kept on. Finally made it, and was well worth the effort for the achievment and to see the panoramic view.
That day made me realise what I was missing in my life, and what more there is to do, so decided to quit playing or so I thought. For 15months I walked away from poker divesting myself of everything, books, poker table, all online poker sites etc. I even quit the forums I was at.

I am a divorced/widower with one grown up son which any day now is due to become a father and am probably older than most here at cardschat. Since quitting poker, I got myself into shape, have a new lady in my life which soon will become my wife.
I love to play poker, but now just sticking to freerolls and not investing any more of my own money into this game, saving for the wedding.
It is also nice to be on a poker forum again and to be able to participate with fellow poker players.

This is just a ramble, but thought it nteresting enough to make a post of it for those of you who have been or are in this situation.

There is more to life than a laptop screen, DON'T LLET POKER RUN OR RUIN YOUR LIFE, play it, enjoy it, but don't sacrfice everything in it, it's not worth it.

Thank you if you take the time to read this post.

You aren't the only person who has let it take over too much of your life. It is important to find a balance in everything that you do.

I have a bit of time in poker, and it is important that you have shared your experience; at least, is a warning to anyone who is starting not make the same mistake. I hope you keep your balance.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I play basketball too and in that, I don't make any money, ever. Basketball also takes me away from the house, so poker's more likely to keep me near family as it keeps me in the same house with them. As for the other things that apparently drop off, exercise helps my poker game, as does eating well, so I can't see a world in which poker stops me from doing these things either. As a matter of fact, probably the best thing for my poker game is anything that I accomplish outside of poker. I haven't determined causality or anything, but it seems I only run bad when I'm being less productive/fulfilled outside of poker.

Except that it's a poker forum with many of it's members playing online poker in front of computer screens. :)

if the tips are good. must try to be organized life .. for hobbies, friends, work, family and poker. days and many tournament players get to play and not get out of that routine. and I think I do well. thus playing 2 or 3 times a week a couple of hours.

You told everything about it.
Poker is just a game, especially for hobby players. It mustnt efface life.

Very good read :)

Yeah, I agree. First thing I decided to read to when I saw the link. It's not me, but it takes work to keep that balance even with other things as previously stated on other comments.

I agree, being productive/fulfilled in other activities outside of poker plays an important psychological role in my game as well.:D

Makes me wonder how some of the successful grinders do it 10-12 hours a day and maintain sanity. Work hard (at poker) play hard (at other stuff) maybe?

I'm just the opposite. My family life and work keep me down to 2 or 3 hours of poker a week. I would love to know what it's like to have all that free time.

Simples.

Expand your poker time substantially despite the almost certain objections from the family and you will soon discover what it's like to have lots of free time.

Problem solved.

Good post Martinez. You gotta be a great guy. I average about 20 to 25 hrs a week playing online poker. And that is plenty enough. How some players average 50 to 70 hrs a week or more, I do not know.

Great post man............Online poker can be really addicting......sleep deprivation is probably the worst part of it plus it thwarts your social life. It takes great awareness for one to learn to balance their life and poker if one is not just a casual player (hobbyist).......Great post!!

Great post and I am glad you got out of the rut and are enjoying real life more. Congratulations on the upcoming wedding and grandchild on the way. I am not a serious grinder and mostly play for fun. It is possible to build a bankroll from nothing without depositing, good luck to you.

Wonderful Post. Poker teaches these life lessons in a way. It is important to periodically, for all of us to review and correct what is important for us. Be it in Poker or in life. We can easily go astray.

Yup, that is me.

From the past 3 months, all I've been doing is live poker.
Which also translates to ignoring everything else that needs to be done.
Along the way I've deposited a few hundred bucks and as of now I'm at ZERO remaining from those deposited.

I feel it starts to work against you if you do too much of it.
At least as a beginner I find the above statement true.

Now I've resorted to reading and participating in forums which doesn't cost money AND adds value to your skill set.
Reading and taking notes is another thing I'm working on right now.
Kind of sworn to myself that I wouldn't be depositing anymore at least for another couple of months.

Thank you for posting this.

I am right there with you buddy. I stepped away for a while because I was online and then in the casino and it was sucking my life away . I stepped away for awhile and dropped the casino and just barely for like the last month to play poker again online. I have deposited and lost then won some back and well I decided to just start using forums and getting to know people plus along the way I can vent. I am not allowing it to control me anymore. Live life buddy definitely find that balance an you will be alright. cheers and good luck to you and the lady !

Good ramble Martinez. Yeah I've seen some of those qualities in myself. I'm American so I don't play too much on-line anymore but when I did, and when I was new to it I was totally obsessed. Strangely I kinda think you have to be to be good at poker, at least for a while. I'm still a serious student of the game but it's no longer an obsession, just a passion. There's a difference.

You could replace poker with just about any other activity in this post tho

This is exactly what I was thinking. I play basketball too and in that, I don't make any money, ever.

Sure, there's porn, video games, alcohol, shopping, second life, the list goes on. These things are not bad in themselves but like poker, they're the kind of things where you can lose yourself if you've got that kind of personality. Poker is a little different in that if you become good at it you could make some money but that's not realistic for most people and for the ones who are it's a long hard road to get there, and don't tell me that family life doesn't suffer along the way, at least a little. Benji, how many times have you had to tell someone you were too busy to meet up because you were actually approaching the money a 10 hour basketball tournament.

I understand what Martinez is saying and I congratulate him on his new life, new wife and forthcoming grandchild.
