If there was still any doubt about poker be considered a sport or not, today we had a major response.

Andre Akkari, Brazilian poker player, is now sponsored by Puma, one of the biggest sports brands in the world. He post on his Facebook page:

"I am really happy to announce my new sponsor, welcome to the incredible poker world @puma !"

In my opinion is an important recognition that the great poker players are talented sports men, and as worthy of respect as football or chess players.

Welcome, Puma!

Hilarious that you reach thia conclusion just because someone got a sponser

Poker is never a sport. Ever. No game is a sport when you can be fat lazy and in terrible health and still win over time. Period

Chess is the same. Never a sport. Ever.

To compare these to football is insane, foolish, and irresponsible

Best and most enjoyable game in the world. But it will NEVER be a sport.

One dude getting sponsored by a clothing line that also makes some sporting goods does not make poker a sport.

But... erm... by that logic Phil Hellmuth did ads for Carls Jr so poker must be a... fast food restaurant?

And once upon a time Puma sponsored the band Korn, so nu-metal must be a sport?

Puma sponsor all sorts of people who aren't sportspeople now too, including Rihanna and Deadmau5: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Puma_sponsorships#Artists

FWIW I can't for the life of me understand the obsession some people have with getting poker classified as a sport. It's a game. It's gambling. Make your peace with that and just enjoy it for what it is IMO :p

I would like to tell only a few things.

there is much poker player (winners and losers) who knows that the issue is,
defends poker as a sport and even gets joging to practice,
but it is a real gambler.
It is a very ****ing subject and not enough to say: I am a poker player, not timba, strategy and bla, bla, bla.
I do not care at all that people think is timba, that I would say is ideal.
I want to play at a table full of Timba.
so I do not care to be accepted or not.
They listen to see if there is a sport and then do not dare because they think it will transpire.
or worse, they are given to read any book before where they learn to do call, call, call is bad, bad, bad.

I can't agree with your logic. I would still not call poker a sport. It's a game of skill with luck mixed in. You have to use logic and tells to beat opponents. For something to be considered a sport, there needs to be some physical aspect to it. running or quick movement being the main indicator of a sport. sports test you for fitness and reflexes as well as the ability to out think and out maneuver your opponent.

Sport is defined as: an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.
There's no denying that there's skill involved and that you're competing against others for entertainment. The physical exertion part is a little iffy unless you want to count the effort required to push all your chips into the middle. If you can call archery and bowling a sport, sure, why not poker too.

I doubt if card games, board games or internet games can be considered as sport.

They are now recreations with, at times, considerable value as prizes.

The problems come when regulating bodies in the Government have a limited view and decide only "sport" is important to people.

As with most recreations the ability of most people to concentrate for long periods depends on their physical well being and therefore physical fitness can be a deciding factor. Sure there are exceptions but in general fitness will play a part in the overall results. Tiredness will affect the decision making and in the end can result in a loss of a game, whether chess, cards or internet games.

Poker is an activity that one can earn/make money from but never a sport. Sports require some sort of physical activity and clicking a mouse all day doesn't qualify.

I think the type of people who think Poker is a sport are also the same people that would benefit from the physical activity of a REAL sport.

Makes sense that people who dont take part in sport would not really understand what sport actually means.

Man I disagree with you in every possible ways. Unless your joking, and that would be fun as it can be.

Per your logic, shooting games in Olympics is not a Sport, what to say about Paralympic Bocce, you really need to train to get better in poker, and not only strategics.. Do you know that your food impacts on your game? Sleep time? Physical conditions for long games?"

That's my opinion, when you have to prepare yourself, study an strategy, take care of your habits and when the most prepared player overcomes the less prepared one, yes, that's sport.

I think the type of people who think Poker is a sport are also the same people that would benefit from the physical activity of a REAL sport.

Makes sense that people who dont take part in sport would not really understand what sport actually means.

There you go! Awesome explanation!

Per your logic, shooting games in Olympics is not a Sport,

You dont know what you are talking about.

Competitive target shooting requires a very high level of physical fitness actually.

Shooters have to maintain and be able to regulate their heart rate. Something that requires a high level of cardio vascular fitness.

Seems these two ''sportsmen'' haven't let food or physical condition infringe too much on their athletic abilities.

Also just noticed Christy Turlington was once sponsored by Puma as well. Does that mean modelling is now a sport??? LOL

Much as it would help the cause of online poker in the US I can't consider poker to be a "sport" because of the rather obvious physical activity aspect that is core to the definition of sport. It is however a game of skill. Simply put Poker is a lot closer to chess than football

Poker could be a sport, but not the normal format. It would have to be a league of sort IMO.

Poker never is and never will be a sport. I can only wonder at the mentality of those who say it is a sport.

Does poker being a sport make it more legitimate? This conversation is perpetually on forums. I think it's competitive and enough skill is involved for it to be considered a sport. For people who think that sports are only games that involve a ball, they should read a book or look up the definition of sport.
