Have you ever watched when the camera sweeps away from Mike & Vincent and pans over to the table, how in the world do the players supposedly not hear them? I can tell they speak quietly, but there's still times it seems they would be able to hear them. They sit like 20 feet (+/- 5) from the table it seems.

i'd say the commentary of the hands is put in after the tournament is done, just so it's easier on them so they know what footage is actually going on the show and because the way Sexton yells at times it would be a plain give away.

I'll guess they are just sitting there for aesthetic value, putting faces to the voices or so to speak.

Pretty sure that's it - the commentary will be recorded (or re-recorded) afterwards.

Occasionally you'll see them in the background of a shot and what they're saying will match up with their lips moving on the screen, but they do the same thing in movies.

I'm watching last weeks game (with Jennifer Harman), and after 1 of the players went AI, he started pacing right in front of M&V and you could see Mike's mouth moving exactly with what he was saying. So, unless they devoted a lot of camera tricks to this episode (doubtful), they are commenting DURING the game. So again, I don't get it.

they sit there and make limited commentary live, based on what they can see and all-ins where the cards end up face up. but 95% of everything they say -- like the stuff regarding their actual hole cards during hands being played -- is recorded and editted in afterwards

OK - I can comment on this since I've actually been at 2 WPT tapings here at Commerce.

First - they tape the crowd reaction shots BEFORE they start playing to get some stock footage. They do this incase someone mouths off or does something obscene when they need a "real" crowd moment.

Second - Yes, Sexton and Van Patten are commentating live right there as the play is going. To my knowledge, they are not told the hole cards. I know they do not have any monitors at their desks, but they are plugged into the sound system. You can hear them, which again makes me think they are just commentating as they go, and then add in more commentary in post production in regards to the hole cards. That way they can get some of the excitement of the "live commentary" and then blend in the post-production commentary knowing the cards.
