I saw this article earlier today where it says you can now buy play money chips at pokerstars! There's an option to spend $200 to receive 165 Million play money chips!

I'm fortunate enough to be in a country where I can play on any online poker site for real money, but even if I wasn't I don't think I would pay for play money chips. What's the point?

Are Stars trying to create a sub-currency like bitcoin?

I truly believe that very few would do, it would be ridiculous to spend 200 dollars to buy chips with that fictitious and do not make money

Why waste $200, you could turn that into so much more playing for real money.

It is a waste of money, if you are not in US!
I would try to move up with that 1000 free play chips that PokerStars gives to all the players! It is good for experience, maybe for bankroll management.
I would never buy play chips!

There was once a market for buying/selling play money chips, I do believe it still exists (although not sure which operators you find online are exactly trustworthy) but perhaps Pstars is simply looking to take out the middleman for anyone who would actually be wanting to spend real money on play chips.

I mean on fb zynga poker id imagine there are people who have played for them, I guess with so much play money being able to play the higher buyin play money games will feel like more of a real game. Just my thoughts as lots of people spend lots of money on often pointless entertainment as it is so this would just fall into that category or pure entertainment $$$$.

It's too bad pstars can just fabricate play money or it would be awsome if you could sell play chips back to them haha.

Wow no way someone has done that, right?? I played with play chips when I try out a new site just so I can get used to the software and how to bet etc. I just do this so that when I play real money I feel more comfortable and used to everything.

Playing with fake chips is so stupid, every hand some moron is all in. It doesn't matter what you are holding just shove because it's not a real game! So why in the world would someone pay $200 do do that? Probably the same people who buy insurance for a rental car.

I also do that, I play the play money on sites that I have just joined to see if I like their software. That's why I don't like the new lock version as when I went to play their play money games, I wasn't allowed to play as I don't have enough points lol. I did notice no1 was playing any of the play money tables, so that could be the issue :)

I think playing with play money to get used to a site is a good idea, sometimes even a quick game before playing a real money tourney just to get the mind focused...But i would never pay for them.

I think you fail to see the point here regarding why people would buy them, that way they could play the higher stakes. If your playing a 500k playmoney game chances are you bought the chips, or have put in the work to win the chips and most likely are not going to be donk shoving atc unless you are a donk who just likes throwing money out the window with no chance of recouping it lol.

In general I don't think anyone who wants to play poker for real money would ever buy play money chips especially on a poker site, like we are all saying its rather pointless (just put in the 200$ and play micro's, 200$ is a lot of 2nl or 2c, 10c, and 25c sng's if looking to just play).

Perhaps people want to play poker, but don't like to "gamble" and don't consider it gambling this way but more entertainment.

Personally i would never buy play chips. When i first started playing poker it was on zynga, i had quite a big BR. One of my playing buddies would sell her chips
i think she got 100$ US for 100 000 000 play chips, unfortunately i didnt get to sell any of my chips because my account was hacked. I guess there is a good market for play chips if hackers go to all that trouble for play chips.
I still play for play chips but here on PS

I play on an online site that is affiliated with a local casino. The online client only has play chips; however, with the play chips you can buy into tournaments that give out prizes (buy-ins to live tournaments at the actual casino, etc etc). So in that case I would say that there is some value in your play chip total.

I would still not pay money for play chips though lol

Does anyone know of any other casinos that do this?

Lol I think Blackrain79 mentioned in his book that he started out playing with play chips, amassed several million play chips, and sold them to bankroll his start in the micros...which eventually led to him becoming the #1 micro player in the world in terms of number of hands and profit.

[edit]
Oh! Here's a link to an interview where he talks about it: http://jetsetcitizen.com/cheap-travel/poker-expert-nathan-williams-blackrain79/

no, this silly but.....if you cant win play chips, why buy them

hypothetically, if you were the worst blackjack player in the world- you would be better off using the money you were going to spend on play chips and spending it on blackjack- then at least you have a chance of a profit

Does anyone know of any other casinos that do this?

I would suggest google-searching your local casino, or even checking the casino's website. If they do, they will probably mention it somewhere.

No way! I wouldn't spend a dollar for any sum of playmoney. The dollar has a real value, playmoney not. Why anybody would do that? I don't get a point of this offer. (if you're not bluffing.. ;))

play money is not for the poker players who play with real money. it is for casual gamblers who spend on money buying various virtual stuff like in Hayday and various strategy games. some of those will be interested in buying playing like a high roller with play chips.

It makes no sense, but there will always be crazy people spending money on that. I think that playing for money is what makes it valuable
