I play in a monthly school where the buy in is U$350, and the organiser decided to create a tourney where the buy in is U$1000, and is a Freeroll.

To be honest, even the U$350 is a little steep for me, but I played in the bigger tourney and finished 10th, and solidly out of the money.

Now the same fellow has raised the buy in to U$1500, as he and most of the players are fairly wealthy and have no problem at all with the amount.

I declined, explaining why, and was astounded when the organiser offered to pay my entry fee himself, citing my present form. Less exciting was the fact that he would claim 100% of whatever I won, and when I rejected his offer, I could see he was offended!

I asked what was in it for me and his reply was that I would "have great fun and get a free lunch"...! Whoopee! :deal:

Now my neighbour, also a poker pal, thinks I acted hastily and should have accepted the offer.

What do you guys advise?

hmmmm...get to play in a relatively high stakes poker tourney and gain experience at no monetary risk to you..I woulda said yes. So what if you wont win any cash regardless of how well you do, you gain something MORE valuable....Experience.

Are you for real? Gain experience? No monetary risk at all? What kind of bs you trying to sell? I mean come on, A there's alot of risk, how does he know that the guy who's willing to front this money, wont A)Want it back, B)Force the money out of him, bottom line you don't know if things are going to get ugly or not (That's my point)

As for your "So what if you wont win any cash" theory, I have to disagree 100% with that comment, the poster stated he does not win thme, but didn't state wheather or not he can win in them, so he may/may not win, but that's not the point, the point is his time should be worth something, that's why ppl play freerolls, to make something, at first your time is only micro pennies, then .25cents so forth and so on

As for the neighbour i'd tell personally tell him, pass me W/E it was you drank, cuz I diffently could use some of that :D

exactly my thoughts on this i would of took the offer even for no money or maybe u could of talked him into breaking you off some for playing well enough to get into the money,,, if you couldnt get him to budge on giving him all your winnings id still play for tips and experience plus it wont cost you

Never take a loan or accept someone to stake you for a game, unless you are pretty much the best of friends, money does funny things to people no matter how kind the offer seems you did the right thing, would be wasting your time anyway with nothing in it for you.

at least u should get a 70/30 split . If u can talk him into that range make sure u have a witness as to what the agreement is, if not a signed contract.

No.. No.. No... I can't see the upside of playing a tourney (even when sponsored) with no return. Give yourself some respect. You need a cut if he wants to pony up the entry. Why waste your time? Is he the freakin guru of Poker? And if he is.. he should trust that his student will make a return on his money. Don't ever bust your ass for nothing.

Gee some neighbor, thats an assinine offer, first off if you don't win he will really be offended, second thats stupid to play for free just to gain experience, that poster is wrong, if anything they are going to gain experience on how you play and if at some point you really wanted to join in they have an advantage on how you play, with nothing for you to show for it, geez that neighbor should be smacked up side the head for being an idiot, at worst case he should at least give you 10 percent, seems to me with so called poker friends like that who needs enemies.

Explain to him that playing for no monetary stake in the tournament would affect your way of playing. No risk on your part, then who cares if I donk in for 7/2os? And would you work for someone in a job for no pay? So why would you here? Look at it this way. He's the CEO of a company that wants to hire you, the hotshot, to work for him to make his company a large windfall. He needs to compensate you for your work. And if you don't make the windfall, that's the risk of doing business.

stake versus loan

You should inform your guy... that there are two ways to go about it... he can either loan you the buy in.... in this case you have to pay him back the exact amount he gives you... and you keep all the winnings.

or he can stake you in... meaning, he pays your buy in... not only for this tournament... but as many as it takes, for you to land in the money... once you make it to the money... he takes half of your winnings.

I would go with the stake in... you get to play and make money... once you win... you have a enough to play with your own bankroll...

but the stake in I talk about here... not the one he offered... your friend wants to give you the royal screw job...

Good Luck at the Tables

I'm still trying to wrap my head around that statement...

And yeah, what would be the point? "Here, play in this $1000 tournament "just for fun", and be grateful for my supreme benevolence!" I'm sorry, but I think his offer was a tad insulting and maybe just a little condescending. You made the right choice, imo.

No. Even if a real sponsor were to pay your way into a poker tourney, you'd still get a cut.

Heh heh! Didn't spot that typo, sorry! It's a Freezeout, of course! :p

Thanks to all of you for the input -

I was a touch insulted, but sometimes pride is best checked by others...;)

not bad...

there's nothing wrong not accepting the offer... he's offer of just fun and free lunch is a bit offending for me... lol... i guess for me $1500 is a big amount already... if he was thinking of helping you play, probably he should have offered to pay for the half, and maybe negotiate for a spli in 2, the registration and prizes... i like his intention for you to be able to play, but getting all the prizes is a bit selfish.. at least offered 30-405 .. lol

you should at least get a cut it seems unfair if your playing and doing all the hardwork and he takes the money at the end even though he did stake u

The first thing that comes to mind for me here is that maybe he is trying to stack the deck in his favor. I would be wondering if he has done this in the past and if maybe there was some team work in prior games. Does the organizer usually win?

Ask him if he wants to stake you (he pays the entry fee and the prize money is split by some predetermined %). As offered, however, no it would be completely ridiculous to take the offer.
