I don't have all the poker metrics at my finger tips such as number of players at events, players on line, home games, general interest etc. Most probably have seen poker on ESPN at one point or another. But like watching golf on TV, though I have watched plenty of golf on TV, most probably aren't so interested, unless you're a player.

TV played an important role in promoting golf to the masses with Arnold's army and the greatest of Jack Nicholas. In golf, TV played an important role in hero building. Then of course as generations past, Tiger Woods, not unlike what Lance Armstrong and the Tour de france did for cycling, each with their notoriety and media fame, catalyzed participation.

Interestingly, I have quite a bit of experience in all of these competitive and recreational activities. They have an advantage over many other activities as that anyone can do them.

The hero building that PokerGo may bring to poker has a good chance of increasing awareness among the masses, and hopefully validation which can lead to legalization.

It's good to see the poker biz fighting back against Australia's recent ban on online poker.

But poker hero building by winning the wsop Main Event or other notoriety, IMO, will be stunted short of its potential unless the likely increased awareness of the game doesn't translate into more players and ultimately social legitimacy and opportunity to play in respectable locations and with consistent home games.

PokerGo and the likes, WSOP, and the casinos for that matter could help educate the public about how to put on a home game in order that said game could be sustainable over the long run.

My bottom line is, more awareness needs to have support to the recreational level not unlike going out to play golf or riding your bike.

What say yeh all?

I took the bait and purchased a yearly subscription to Poker Go. If you do choose to purchase a subscription I would recommend searching for a coupon code first. I did and saved ten bucks off of the annual.

I watched Day 1 of Poker After Dark on demand yesterday. I was reasonably pleased with the coverage. The audio could use some work but it is a relatively new production. Some Mics were quiet, at times, at least on my PC, including the host's (Ali Nejad (sp.)).

Now I do wish the banter wouldn't gravitate to politics so much, but you can't have everything. ;)

In term's of the OP's theme of promoting the game, I'm not sure how much PokerGo will serve in doing so simply because it is a paid service. It would seem to me that folks willing to pay the monthly/annual fee are already hooked. On the other hand, I don't pretend to be some kind of marketing genius, so who knows.

I think I am going to enjoy my subscription, though, and if it continues to play a role in promoting certain events like Poker After Dark and extended coverage of the Main Event, then I'm in. So far, so good. Two thumbs, tentatively, up.

The only thing thats gonna be good for poker is Lebron James and a handful of other celebrities to preach how much they love poker in order to get the public worked up enough to demand congress make internet poker legal. Shame that, thats what it would take. Also a shame that it wont happen.
