this is exactly what I thought when I read the OP.
Why check? it lets the other guy think they are ahead, so they bet big/push.
And, in the first one, you have 22 on a flop of 278, then you check????? why? he could be drawing to the straight, the flush draw(if there was one) or even have 2 pairs, another set, etc. You have to bet to show you have a hand and are willing to play it, and you also bet to gather information.
