Why do people let the timer run out instead of folding?

A lot of people seem to let the timer run out -> let the game mark them as inactive/sits them out -> then deal back into the game immediately. Is there a reason for this other than to waste the other guy's time?

There are many reasons this happens. Some players are on there last of their bankroll and are fighting to at least min cash and do it thinking it helps them... Some players are possibly multi-tabling and have big decisions on other tables. Knowing the hold trash (at your table) letting it time out won't kill them. Sometime life just gets in the way, the door bell rings, or the phone, etc. Since you refer to them being labeled as inactive, I'd assume you play at ACR/BCP. If so, they don't have hand for hand when approaching ITM, so some players do it to try and ensure a cash. Then you have the people who do it to try and get under the skin of the other players at the table. If those are the one's you are talking about, the best thing to do is not let it get to yopu... As it really it out of your control.

Im guilt of running the timer occasionally.
Its mainly to run off and do something, like a quick dash too to the toilet.

Like waterboy sez, could be for a number of reasons, but usually for a reason. There are some folks who deliberately use up 6-8 seconds or so, regardless of hand, to disguise their strength when folding or betting.... ie, not to be that player who insta folds bad hands and then all of a sudden raises or goes all in after taking some time to make that decision. By using a deliberate set time every hand, they are being skillfully coy. If it tilts anyone, so be it.

Yup lots of reasons, Just thought I add sometimes people like me lag and get disconnected and then right as it folds you the internet miraculously makes a come back until the next hand where you are dealt AA and then it does it again..

Sometimes when people are faced with a big decision they either forget to put their time bank on (If they don't have it on automatically) and they sit them out.. Sometimes people are faced with a really big decision and run out of their time bank before they can make up their minds - If you're really deep in thought sometimes you just lose track of how long you've been tanking

Lot valid reason for this. It is your clock to do what you want with. Sometimes it could be a simple bathroom break or strategy to move up a couple positions.

It happened to me yesterday on PP. Was having a little think, watching the time bar very closely, then it sat me out before the time bar went completely down. Just as I was about to bet. Damn.

so if you dont want even more people to time run I would suggest not saying ZZZZZZZZ

During the bubble some of the player might try to min cash when they already shortstack.

Many people do this and they do this with every hand they don't play. I think it may be the min cash thing, not because they had to use the bathroom ;)

Most of the time they are just jerkoffs. I mean the ones that do it every hand.

As mentioned before, there can be many reasons.

Most of the times I have done it is because I am multi-tabling/multi-tasking, but sometimes I do use the time if I am in one big game and I need to think about an opponent's play. For example, if they raise me all-in, and I need to think about how many times they have done that before and had the nuts - sometimes that can take a long time to call or lay down.

I know lot of people hate this.Personally if i feel the need to stall i usually just ask the people at the table if its ok.Most people usually dont have a huge problem with it ,and even stall for me .Of course i usually only do this when i dont have a bankroll and/or have a tiny stack .I will say though if people strongly object i will only use about half my timer or time out every other hand.

conectivity issue is another reason people seem to be longer than need it to make a move, and also as Waterboy writes there are another reasons as well

I usually allow the timer to run down to a specific spot before I act. I do this, as Blitzenfish said, to try and prevent giving any more tells than I already give off.

Later on in tourneys, I will often have other tables from the same game running so I may observe players there, and that eats up time.

Or they are dealing with others stalling, by going off and doing other things like reading forums in their browser and just look back occasionally to check their hands.

I disable the auto timebank on sites that have it so I won't take forever if I walk away.

In tournaments near the bubble you will find may short stacks do this hoping the some other player bubbles and they can min-cash.

Only time it happens for me is when I'm multi-tabling and I have a big decision to make. Other than that, I take the laptop with me!

Usually what you described is around the money bubble or pay jumps I see it happen. It's very common in satellite tournaments.

I guess that 'time move' is used as tactic option by short stacks when they are near to 'hand for hand' situation, just trying to take money prize as evereybody else. ;)
