Why do people do this?

Why do people patronize a loser by saying GG? How can losing be good?
A good game is when you win not when you lose.
Making money is good, losing it is bad.


GG cause they lost some money won't make the loser feel any better.

I think it's common courtesy and good sportsmanship. In all of our CC events. I think everyone says GG (Good Game) as an act of respect and sportmanship. Sure, it's easier to say when you not the one who lost, but still...

Also, sometimes, you really do respect the person you just defeated. I know sometimes, it has been a really chess battle of wits and nerve to finish first, leaving me thinking, wow, that was a good player. So I say, "GG", and mean it.

How again can losing be good? Now the aspect of sportsmanship comes to play wich depending on the person Poker is or isn't a sport.

LOL I just find it ironic to say GG to a loser.

I can see if you are a winner,that is good. Poker is a game of chance as well.. Just like someone scratching a lottery ticket yet lol I know to extremes this is but you don't tell them GG cause they lost.

Yet the game could be good cause they enjoyed it. But then it brings back to the part that one could say "Glad you enjoyed losing".

Well take GG as Good Going if your that way in mind !!! To think it patronizes people then your showing no respect to a fellow poker player we all win we all lose and be all get bad beats THATS POKER !!!! I believe your twisting for twisting sake it just COMMON COURESTY if you dont want to say it then dont thats your choice

I understand the point you are clearly making. I am sure it can be said in a patronising way. At the same time, when you say to someone, you really gave me a run for my money, guess the balance of luck just fell on my side this time - people just say GG.

There may even be some weird element of guilt for winning, especially, when (ok, I'll admit it), I win a tournament playing an utter rubbish hand - then instead of apologising for being a complete numpty, I might say GG.

I am almost completely over this whole guilt thing, unlike when I first started out, I was apologising after every hand I won - which wasn't that often.

Do you have any suggestions about what we could say - instead of GG? . When you win a tourney, what do you normally say - or is it that you choose to say nothing

LOL no that is my thing.. I do understand that GG is complimentary in its own way. I just don't see how losing can be good thats all.

I personally don't like losing unless its a game for shits and giggles such as a home game with family and we are just playing for chips or some freeroll.

But I don't see how losing money is good. The company of the game can be good, the play of the game can be good, and the atmosphere of the game can be good.

How about Nice to play you, hope to play you again. Great play on your part I just got lucky. Great Company. Something that doesn't have the implications of you lost.

Howard Lederer believes that you should never let your opponent know how bad you feel when you are beat. I agree with that and I (and others may) type "GG" when I want to hide the fact that I am so pissed! Even leaving without typing anything may look as though a person is mad, so I say "GG" even though I may be lying and want to really say "You Lucky Donkey! You called a 7x BB raise with 83 off (and cracked my Aces w/2 pair)? Please keep doing that so I can win my money back, idiot!" I actually still do that sometimes and I am trying to cut down on it by making myself just type "GG". Just looks classier.

...and yes, the winner typing "GG" to the person they just beat is rubbing it in a bit and not as classy.

Don't know about you, but that's exactly what I am saying when I say "gg"--just in a nutshell. A lot of times, if you're playing online, your don't have time to type that all in, because the window closes pretty quickly once the game is done. So, "gg" makes it easier. Most people get that.

It's done for the same reason you might shake hands with a player departing a table in a real-life poker game, to let him know you respected his play and although he didn't win, he was a worthy opponent. As said above, it's a courtesy more than a compliment.

It's similar to saying "I'm sorry" as a gesture of sympathy rather than an apology. Same words, different meaning.

I've seen GG typed when a player that's sat out the entire game has busted out (in a Cardschat game). I've seen GG typed to someone bust out on the 3rd hand, chasing an inside straight on an All-in (in a Cardschat game). Used sparingly it means something. Typed by every player every time someone busts out, it means nothing.

Yes, then it becomes something people don't mean, like a coworker asking how you are while passing you in the hall without really caring about the answer or even really expecting one, or a cashier at the grocery store telling you to have a nice day when you leave.

It is polite though, but i'm a bad loser myself! When i've donked my chips off on a bonehead play, 6 GG's seem to make it worse! I think we should replace the "Good Game" parting with "C U Next Time"

I always say gg regardless of whether I'm the one staying or leaving.
Its just a case of good manners really, and it separates the gracious losers from the bad losers, and yes there is such a thing as a gracious loser.

It would be pretty hard for every player knocked out to wait who knows how long just so they can say gg to the eventual winner.

If a player in on his/her A game and doesn't finish 1st, does that mean they didn't play a good game?

Its an option really, the same way you might say nh,nb, etc.
If you don't like it, close your chatbox and let those that wish to express themselves in this way do so.

When i lose i always say GG or WP(well played) no matter how frustrated i am. What really maked me angry though is when a player types "Ha Ha" or "Loser" when he knocks someone out.

In 1 SnG i saw the most disrespectful performance from another player, he was the SB and he raised the BB. The BB who was short stacked re-raised all in, the SB thought about it for a second then called. I couldn't believe my eyes when the cards were shown, the BB had pocket Aces while the SB turned over 2 7 of clubs. I laughed out loud at his call, what a numpty, i was stunned into silence when he paired his 2 and 7 on the flop. The BB got no help for his Aces on the turn or river and he was out. there was an exchange between them that i'll never forget, it went like this...

BB "WTF 2 7!!! WHY DID YOU CALL WITH THAT????"

SB " 2 7 suited!!!"

BB "man that sucks"

SB "what sucks is your poker"

BB "**** YOU!!!"

he made the worst call i've ever seen and his justification for calling an all in raise with 2 7 was that they were suited. To then go on and brag about it was unbelievable. i told him after that i was gonna bust him and the other guy that was left said he was gonna do the same. thats what we did, around 5 hands later the value of the BB was enough to put him all in.

Not at all, and if someone HAS played a good game and been knocked out, then GG is an appropriate thing to type. If they HAVEN'T, it probably isn't, not in my opinion anyway, but it is a friendly Cardschat thing. I don't know whether people say it when I bust out, i've usually pulled the powercable out of the computer before it's been typed!

Sorry, I didn't realise it was such a big deal. I've never been good at writing, it would always take me four or five attempts to get a passable essay in school. I'm even worse at typing so my posts are probably full of mistakes.
