Just curious about how did you all learn how to play poker? Just like a lot of other games, I actually learned by watching others then taught myself how to play and got better at it as I played more and more... How did you learn how to play?

Two starts

Before the Moneymaker effect, I played with a friends family and then we made it a monthly dealers choice game. Was OK, but now understand that I did not have a clue as to what I was doing.

After Moneymaker, I first played in a 30 person neighborhood game, went out second and decided to go buy Super System II. Read it and many other books, started playing in Bar League freerolls and freerolls for Subscription sites.

Moved on to local casino playing $2/$4 and $3/$6 limit and eventually moved to $1/$3 and $2/$5 NL.

Started playing tournaments started at $25-$40 and now will play up to $100-$200 when in CA or local wsop Circuit and MSPT events.

This has been an 11 year journey, with more to learn everyday.

BTW-Played in my first PLO8 tourney last week-More to come!

That is cool, so would you say poker is becoming more of a career then a hobby to you? And if you dont mind me asking, how much money have you made so far from poker?

I am the same way.. I always try to learn from my mistakes as I keep playing, hoping not to repeat the same mistake twice and knowing the right time to raise and go all in.

One day I was on YouTube and I stumbled upon the final hand of the 'Big One for One Drop 2014' between Daniel Coleman and Daniel Negreanu- I was hooked ever since. I taught myself how to play by watching the 'Everything Poker' series by PokerStars. As I wanted to take the game more seriously, I decided to read some strategy articles and guides that were provided by CardsChat. I then decided to sign-up to PokerStars and Full Tilt to get some in-game experience by playing against other players. I play freerolls and I currently have a $113.57 bankroll without having deposited. You could say I'm earning while I'm learning.

My friend taught me on a school bus on our way to school. We were both great scholastic chess players then and he told me that this game is great for chess players because it has a lot of the same fundamentals as chess! I got hooked. I would play HU with kids for cookies and lunch meals after that. Never got hungry again lol

I first learned to play poker as a young bride from my country in-laws, we played 5 card draw and used wooden matches or pieces of corn kernels for chips. When I really began to play on-line was about 10 years ago from my daughter in-law, She taught me Omaha, her favorite. and then later Texas Hold'em.

I taught myself via Lee Jones' book, "How to win at low level limit Poker" it was my bible. I had been a card counting blackjack player, it occurred to me that BJ played against the house. Poker played against other people, and by gum, I am smarter that the average bear. My husband said "You can't play poker, those cigar chompin men will eat you alive". I lost in my first two sessions, then began to win. In a year my husband decided to play poker also.

A mixture of watching people, books, forums, training video sites, but the main thing more than anything is experience.

Yes that is very true, you cant really learn how to play until you actually get into the game and experience it. That is when you really learn and get better at it.

Some friends thought me the basics. The growing came with my own study e experience playing. I think we always have something to grow and fix. Its impossible to be perfect on this game, and this challenge motivates the most players I think, including me.

I learned how to play poker from friends on summer afternoons when it was too rainy to go outside. I think we could have been betting with pieces of macaroni and we were playing a game with lots of jokers, like "Acey-deucey-one-eyed-jacks or something. I remember being kind of lucky as a kid, whereas now I'm grateful if I can get TJ-suited.

It wasn't until I read Doyle Brunson's "Super System" that I began to understand how poker actually worked. I gather I'm not the only one who's read that book...
