I was playing a home game last saturday, and we were down to final 3 players when this hand came up.
D (5K) A-10
SB (22K) 10-8
BB (12K) A-9
flop 8-9-Q-K-10
All players were all-in before river. No flushes. SB won with 10-8 for 2pair.
My question is: BB had Dealer covered in chips, but his hand lost to Dealer. Should BB still get 2nd place? (because he had more chips than dealer)
Does the dealer having the best hand between himself and BB mean anything?

Just wondering...

Hi bjharada, a search on the forum would probably turn up the answer as just in the last couple of weeks there have been a couple of threads. Answer to the question, it is correct that the bb gets 2nd because he had the dealer covered. Hand rank between the bb and dealer mean nothing.

Essentially in this situation you have a main pot between the three players, a side pot between the bb and sb. The sb won so you both lost the main pot putting the dealer out in 3rd and then you lost the side pot as well putting you out in 2nd.

Hope this explains.

NP and no worries on the search, I just recall seeing a couple of threads in the last week or so which probably means in the last couple of days because I think I am online at cc a bit too much and sometimes a day feels like many days haha.

Who ever had the most chips at the time of elimination gets the higher place.

There are two pots in play here, so if you think about each pot then it makes the finish order obvious. Also, a point of technicality: all 3 players are not all-in. Only Dealer and SB are, BB's tourney is not at risk in this hand.

Main Pot = 15K (all 3 players, 5K each)
Side Pot = 14K (BB for his remaining 7K + SB's call)

First the Main Pot is awarded to SB, which knocks out Dealer in 3rd. That leaves SB and BB competing for the Side Pot, which is awarded to SB and knocks out BB in 2nd.

Yeah, it's the same thing. I skimmed the responses and missed it being worded that way, or I wouldn't have posted it, LOL. Sorry.
