Nobody comes close to Phil Hellmuth in a game of Hold'em.

STU UNGAR. Hands down.

If it weren't for the drugs and wreckless lifestyle, he'd hands down be my choice. As is, it's tough to say. I like Barry Greenstein's answer in Ace on the River.

Ungar sucked at life, too true (but damn could he play cards!). Yeah, BG's "no one" is probably the most accurate answer of course.

The only way to answer this objectively is to agree on a single measure of poker skill. I doubt it this is possible.

Nevertheless, here are a few possible measures:

  • Most $ earned. Flawed because of difference in stakes and tournament fields.
  • Most BB/100 earned in cash games.
  • Most finishes in the money in MTTs
  • Most first places in MTTs
  • Highest win rate in MTTs and SNGs
  • Most diverse player(cash games, tourneys, different poker games)
  • Most beautiful player(for females):D
  • Most respected by fellow pros
  • what else? ...
My personal favorites are Doyle and Phil Ivey, but there are so many outstanding players, it is a really tough call.

And I don't know much about Stu Ungar except that he is considered one of the greatest players by pros. Maybe we should start doing drugs as well.:canabis:

I think the best answer is from Barry Greenstein. Some days others will be better.

Tough to choose, but if I had to it would be [SIZE=-1]Daniel Negreanu.Reason being he is still young(to my standards) and I never seen someone read a table better.

Cheetah nailed it, there are a lot of different Bests. I respect the heck out of anyone that can make a living out of poker and be respected/feared by their peers.

Well we still talk about the best baseball player, the best football player, etc. even though there are many different positions and stats to use, there's still an MVP and people try to talk about who's the best.

I don't watch much poker on TV but from what I've seen I think Phil Ivey is the best I've seen. Ngreaneu (sp?) is good and has a very good attitude, very friendly, but I haven't seen anything that makes him look like the best player now, let alone ever. Sure he's very good, but best?

Sure but the MVP is bases on in the years case offensive statistics. What is the correlation for poker players, tournament cashes, ring game money won? A lot of what makes poker players great isn't measurable in the traditional sense.

We will never agree on this! And it is a good thing we don't agree, IMO.

I respect any person who has achieved a lot in their field of expertise, whatever it may be. For example, I respect Tom Hanks for his film-making abilities.

Do I need to say anything more?

daniel negraunu is a tricky one. Yes indeed he is one heck of a poker player, but he does get more than his fair share of luck, he does seem to suckout a lot when in all in situations. So although he is probably the best reader in the game, he clearly still puts his money in when behind which obviously isn't world class when you get people like hellmuth who very rarely puts his money in behind.

Also when it coems to cash games, i have to say kenny tran, seems to run over everyone at every cash table

Doyle, Stu, a couple Phil's, TJ, Danny, Barry, a couple Johnny's all rate right up there. Out of respect I'll go with Doyle's "read" since I have mucho respect for him. We've just lost the best poker player ever
