I have all kind of these little places around my house that has like a bar on one side and gambling room on the other. Do these places have tournements as well?
best advice is AVOID these types of places, only play poker in casinos, online or with your friends and people you know. cheating and collusion increases a lot in these places and of course its not legal to gamble outside a casino, not in my country at least.
Idk what country you live in but (assuming it isn't the US since you have Stars and FT updated) but in the US some bars have small gaming licenses where you can play poker Cash games,
for Iowa law I think tournaments are restricted from anything outside the Casino's I don't know about the other states...
@ OP ask around, look it up online if you do find some where I would suggest picking legitimate business's and not the shady building down the alley.
I would start by trying to play with friends for 5 to 10 bucks once a week post something on Facebook or twitter or what ever else there is out there... I would just keep from mentioning playing for real money.
Keep it brief like "anyone up for some poker?"
Im from Argentina and here is not legal to gamble outside a casino, and i think it should be illegal in every country as well. playing with some friends for money is one thing, with strangers without any regulation is completely different.

In virginia we had charity events like at bowling alleys and bingo halls that would have the best tournaments I've ever been to and they cheated in those. The players would shuffle themselves so was really easy to cheat if you were good enough. Eventually they were caught because well cheaters get greedy and theres always that one guy with an eagle eye that will catch any cheat regardless of how good he is. I've even played poker in a mason lodge and yes they cheated there too lol.. So if you're trying to find a place that isn't sketchy gl. I mean it's poker people live to cheat and trick and scam. Unfortunately for now it's just part of the game until poker is organized on a federal level.
I was playing live a couple months ago, and still know where some cash games are, but lost my job recently... so haven't really had a chance to play lately. The bar league I used to play in was The East Coat Poker League, and I go to Colonial downs once or twice a summer when they have that free tournament; I think that league is called Royal Flush Poker League. I used to go to Richmond on occasion when they had a Charity event at the Holiday Inn, that was Big Dogs Playing Poker league. I am in Williamsburg and used to play a lot of cash games in Newport News and Hampton, but found some closer to me eventually.I'm in hampton roads as well. Use to live in portsmouth now I live in Hampton. You still play any live poker out here?
I disagree I think it should be legal in more places.. I don't think it should be up to any government to tell the people where and where they can or can not gamble. (As long as the gambling doesn't involve animal abuse) or isn't life threatning such as boxing or MMA fights (Not saying I don't like them I love MMA) but without regulations those could be a health hazard.
Besides these bars aren't some underground places they are licensed with small gaming permits. Bars have a lot to lose if things go wrong they could get fined, lose their gaming permits, and suspensions.
