Poker wasn't invented, it evolved.
Poker isn't even an individual entity it is a family of gambling card games.

Various card games have been played for centuries.
The standardised 52 card 4 suit deck was adopted throughout Europe by 1480.
Brag, Poque and Poche were betting and stealing card games played in England, France and germany from which Stud Poker probably evolved.
But 20 card decks with betting on hand values recorded to have been played in New Orleans in the early 1800's also contributed to the evolution.
The american west and riverboat gamblers were probably the pioneers of that evolution with 52 card stud poker variants emerging around 1850.

Texas Holdem Poker is thought to have started around the 1920's after it was discovered that the game of Stud Poker could not accommodate all the Texas ranchers that wanted to play, since the cards would run out before all the players had been dealt their cards.
However Holdem poker did not become widely popular until it was adopted as the game of choice for tournaments such as 'The world series of poker', the 'World Poker Tour' and online poker, where again a multitude of players could be accommodated with a small deck, although table size started to be standardised for 9 players. Holdem however also facilitated better spectator entertainment.

It is known that poker like game appeared in China in 969 BC when the Chinese were playing cards and dominoes dominoes. They were called Domino cards, which the Chinese Emperor introduced the then elite. Until 1834 the poker was considered a game of gambling and fraud ( now of course many think so). And in the middle ages began to appear variations of such games in Germany and France. Back in 1834 I would like to say about one person-Jonathan green. He was a big fan of gambling and because of this, even went to jail. There he learned to play in Pogue, the French variation of the game and when I got out went to Mississippi, where he continued to hone his skills becoming the first professional poker player and the way he gave him the name of poker

It is not important who invented poker, but more importantly, he did it! :)

I agree with you completely. No matter who invented it -- the main thing that poker is. We play in it.

I think your question very interesting, I´ve been playing for a long period of time and never looked for this question. With some research , I found the recent version of poker was developed in France, like they said above, but I´ve read too, that some strands point that the first conception of Poker was brought by the Song Dynasty in X century. There´s a divergence in that fact, because some people say that were the persians in XVI century. Anyway, we have a game that´s a masterpiece today.

Some historians says that it was invented in China. They said that poker's origins can be traced to a domino-card game. Other say it originate from the United States.

The history of poker goes back to the distant past, to the present time it is not known what the game became the progenitor of one of the most popular games today. Some sources claim that in the history of poker the fundamental role played a game like Chinese dominoes. According to some historians, in 900 years BC the Chinese aristocracy played a game, something vaguely reminiscent of poker. In the 18th century the history of poker was a new development - widespread in Europe got games like: "pochspiel" (Germany), "Breg" (England) and "pok" (France). These games will surely have much more to do with the history of poker, as poker hands already were built of five cards, and one of the most important aspects of the game was a bluff. Game rules differed in different regions of the countries, but in the same way as poker, had a few rounds and won the strongest combination of five cards. Truly the history of poker begins with the moment that the French colonists began to develop America. It is here, this game has won great popularity among local residents. It was impossible to find a saloon in which local residents would not play poker. Over time, poker has become almost a national game, played everywhere by people of all ages. Poker was fond of even most of the presidents of the United States.

No, Texas invented the two-card poker but the game was not invented there, it was just suggested in its five-card form in many places at once, both in USA and Europe.

Texas is where they began to realize that holding all the cards yourself isn't that great of an idea as it leaves barely any information to gamble wisely with. So texas hold'em evolved.

Then other game forms including Omaha evolved.
