When violence is justified

We all agree with free speech, well must of us anyway However I am starting to wonder. A certain particular issue of human behaviur has been infuriating me for some time and to call myself incandescent with rage would be an understatement of epic proportions. This is not so much specifically poker related but related to peoples attitudes on psychology religion science and general, basically peoples general attitudes to everything . However it does certainly relate to poker and this been a poker forum I will refer to Poker as the main example here.
The fact is that when you look at nature and evolution and history to the depths that I have you start to notice a sort of beutiful magnificant poetry with a twist of agony and frustration. When you look at the animal kingdom you seem to notice that most creatures do not like to think on a significant scale, although I would say that most animals seem to like thinking for themselves a lot more then the majorty of human kind. You start to see that we are only animals more intelligent then the rest of them. Well that may be the common consensus although recently I am starting to wonder if it is a minorty of Humans carrying the majorty when the majorty lack the intelectual capacity for any original though or critical thinking at all. One wonders if they were dumped in the wild if they would be able to figure out how to eat at all.
Ok i slightly exagerate here but as said I am just a little bit furious right now. What annoys me is when people dismiss me like an idiot and assume they know what they are talking about. As if my many hours or months or years of researching is worth less then something they heard from some guy one time.
I think i suffer it particulary more then most because of me been aspergers and bad with people, they just assume im an idiot and a joke.
You know I turned to poker for a reason, mainly because soceity wants to write me off as an idiot any job I ever had i was picked on any school i went to the same. I never could get a job that wasn't a rotating door job. It soon became clear that if i wanted to achieve anything I was on my own. so I turned to poker. Poker has paid my way through university has given me hope for a future if I can't get a job.
Anyway I have boasted about poker success because people think I am idiot. I never was trying to say that I was better then them, just merly that I was not an idiot that I am not a loser. However they assumption was that I am mug on a roulette wheel.
But the classic the all time classic comes today.
I mention to some im sure I will be a millionaire she asks how I mention well pretty sure I could do from poker amongst other things she laughs like I am an idiot the idea of making money from poker seems laughable and retarded huh?
To be fair I have never put the top effort into anything, but I do pretty good at the moment and am more then confident that when I invest a substantial effort into poker the returns will be signficiant. However she laughs so here is how the conversation goes next

ME: do you know how it works like whether your playing the house or other players?

Me: do you understand how much the house or a site might charge

Jesus, chill out.
When people give you that reaction explain to them how many people do make a living from it, go through the downsides and how difficult it is when met with "why doesn't everyone do it". I relish talking about poker and enjoy these sorts of conversations.

Although I only talk about it if someone has specificly asked me about it as the mass majority of people won't be intertested. Coming up with that your going to be a millionaire is pretty big headed, of course people will be sceptical.

How did any of this justify any violence?

and not trying be rude or anything but millionaire? If you think you can eventually become a millionaire wouldn't it be fairly easy to make basically an entry level income of say 25-35000 a year? If you make that then great but if someone says to me "you know i'll be a millionaire someday" i'd probably laugh at them too. There's a pretty big med school here an one of the students had a similar attitude. He was acting sketchy at a bar. My girlfriend knows he has one of his own and asked about how she'd feel if she knew he was trying to make out with anyone in that bar and he replied with "I'm going to be a rich doctor someday. She's lucky I let her stay with me" Obviously we laughed at him pretty hard. It just seems like that same attitude. That said, I hope it does motivate you enough to actually become a millionaire and you can find the truck stop diner she works at and tip her 2 bucks while you shuffle through your black cards and 100 dollar bills. Not saying it can't be done. Just saying you have to realize how ridiculous you sound when you say stuff like that.

Listen to what people have to say , evaluate it , then make a decision.

i am sure all of us have experienced this to a small degree, you tell someone thet you play poker, as a hobby, for extra money, or as a full time job and people who have no idea about poker think because its referred to as gambling, they assume its just a game of luck, ala roulette, betting on the horses(yes i know this is not purely luck, but it is referred to as such by mindless people), buying a scratchcard etc etc

once i point out the Ducati in the garden was paid for fully from poker winnings, the next question is "will you teach me to play"

one guy i used to work with knew the money i had made from poker and asked me to come round one night and show him how to play online, i agreed, he was a good mate. i told him to get setup by downloading the poker room and depositing some money

i arrive at his house and we load up the poker room, i check his balance $10.00, his FIRST question was, "how long do you think it will take me to turn this into $100, this weekend?" he seemed to think with a couple of house of lessons on the rules of poker, he would be crushing it and making loads of cash from his 10 bucks lol

i showed him the basics of poker and good hands and where to raise, how much, position, bankroll management, the basics of SnG's and Cash, we played a little micro cash for a hour, and finished a little up, played a $0.25 SnG and got a third, he was all set

after the weekend i checked his sharkscope to see how he was doing, after i left, he played 2 $5.00 SnG's busted in something like 9th and 7th

i asked him at work the next week how it went, he was confused and wondered why it was such a hard game to make money..........

safe to say he has never played since

You need to believe in yourself and things people say can never hurt you. I come from a family of seven kids(i'm next to the youngest ergo I caught the most ribbing)....If one of us was to talk of good fortune you can bet someone would point out how bad our hair was that day or how much weight we seemed to be putting on......I don't think we ever really thought ill of each other, it was just our duty to keep each other grounded...I'm sure this was just some of that.

Trying to explain something to someone who won't 'get it' is a waste of time. Why care what they think anyways?

I've had friends watching my games occassionally, they see me win a big pot in a tournament or knock a guy out (I've explained to them a few times, it's 'tournament play'.. & then give them details of what this entails) & ask, "great! how much money did you just win from that guy?" .. sigh..

Or the comment (while you're 5hrs. into a tournament, last 100 players) "Let's go out now. Haven't you played long enough already?" Again attempt to explain 'it's a tournament blah blah blah'. They respond, "Yah but it's been 5hrs. Just play it later. You can always play another day you know." (< I've learned you're better off to just humour them.. ie. "How much did you just win from that guy?" Me, "I just won $750 off that sucker!" Them, "Yah but is it like 'real money'?" (sigh... lol).

Violence is NEVER justified in poker, or any other - - - - (insert word of choice).

Rape, murder, child abuse, a few situations where I believe violence is justified, either as a defense, or in some cases (I have been opposed on this stance) simply cause the asshole who did it deserves it.

Can anyone actually justify adding poker to that list?????

I work at home and play poker in the evenings to relax. Several friends have mentioned they worry about my gambling addiction.

Thank you US government from taking a psychological game and turning it into running with the devil.

BTW.. I don't care what anyone thinks about my poker playing. I enjoy myself and thats all that counts

I have to admit there are certain times when a good slap upside the head is just what is needed but violence is never justified unless faced with violence and even then if it's avoidable it should be avoided. That's what a civilized society is all about. If you are talking about people ticking you off in general and it somehow relates to poker, then take a break from poker and realize what is really important in life in the first place. It sure as $H!& isn't poker. I think people take all kinds of things in life like poker waaaaaay too seriously. Sports would be included in this. Anyway, hope things get better on and off the felt.

The problem is people who know nothing about poker or specifically online poker tend to think of it the same as slots or other forms of casino gambling while at the same time never thinking of buying lottery tickets as gambling (it's actually the most regressive form of gambling).

They also don't realize that there is a wide range of people who play and a variety of reasons why they play and how much they play.

I have a family member who thinks nothing of spending $12K a year on golf but worries about me being a gambling addict.

Nothing is going to change her mind, so I refuse to discuss it anymore.

From reading OP's post (& some of their previous posts on Cardschat) I'd assume that poker is OP's source of income (it's how he makes a living).
Sure there's many things in life that are more important than money/job, etc.
For some poker is just a hobby, for others it's a way in which to make a living (there's a big difference).
