When did the us ban online poker and why?

I recently noticed no us players on pokerstars, ive been up north on a drilling rig and must have missed the news. Why did the states ban online gambling?

That's the short answer, it's actually far more complicated than that. Some would argue that online gambling isn't 'banned' in the US. Some sites still serve some US states. Three states (NJ, NV, and DE) have some form of regulated online gambling.

online poker isn't banned in the USA but it is illegal to process money to online sites.
