on the river, two players in the showdown one guy throws his cards open but on card accidentally flip back face down, there is no other tabled cards yet and without a word the dealer grabs the cards but the player reaches out, grabs the face down card from the dealer's hand and flips it up before the dealer could muck them. in my opinion if the hand didn't not touch the muck and there is no tabled cards therefor the hand is live but I might be wrong. help me out cause I wanna know for next time.

Need more details. I assume this was before the betting for the river had occurred? Not sure why he would fold before the betting. Maybe he was trying to play an angle and get the other guy to reveal his cards before betting.

depends on the casino. different casino's have different ruling. The manager of the poker room where this incident happened will make it clear.
If it is home game and if it was my hand then "there is no way the hand is declared dead" ..
By the way i would never dare and grab my hand forcibly from the dealer. That man is such a "despo" !! I guess "desperate times require desperate measures" ... lol

YMMV depending on the room but as a general rule of thumb if there is no doubt as to the card in question being the card the player held it is still live.

If we're actually at showdown (ie: all the betting is complete) then it sounds like this is a no-brainer: dealer just turns the cards over and if either of them has already gone into the muck, every effort should be made to retrieve them from the muck because it sounds like an honest mistake: player was just showing his hand and one of them accidentally flipped back over.

Here's the relevant rule from Robert's Rules of Poker Section 3, Dead Hands

2. Cards thrown into the muck may be ruled dead. However, a hand that is clearly identifiable may be retrieved and ruled live at management’s discretion if doing so is in the best interest of the game. An extra effort should be made to rule a hand retrievable if it was folded as a result of incorrect information given to the player.

each home game has its rule, but personally I think it's not very polite, do what the player did. an opinion nothing more.

Wait... what? It wasn't polite of the player to try to stop the dealer from mucking a hand the player was trying to table?!?
