Although I have commented on some other people's posts this is my first post so I guess you can call it my introduction post. Hi, I'm Hobonc. That is pronounced Ho-bonc. Some people just say hobo though and that's OK too. What does it mean? No, I don't bonc hos, lol. It's a play on my name, (ho is the first two letters of my last name and bo is the first two letters of my first name), and my home State, (North Carolina = nc).

I thought about using a catchy poker related name but now I'm glad I didn't. Maybe it's just me but it seems like 98% of those with some witty poker name spent more time thinking up a name than learning poker, if you know what I mean. It's kinda like that deal where there has never been a main event winner with a poker tattoo. One poker related name I do like, who is a great player also, is gigabet. What do you all think?

Another type of name that I wonder about is when it describes the players looks or attractiveness. Like "sexy lady" or "hot momma". I've found that more often than not, when a person labels themself sexy, well, they are anything but.

That's enough rambling from me for now. I'm off to bed but I will check in with you all tomorrow. GL at the tables!

Howard Bowler?
Excellent try but you have it reversed....ho=last name and bo=first.
Try Boward Holer, or Bowler Howard. :confused:

I'm from a small town on the NC-SC line 1/2 way between Charlotte and Wilmington

How do you do multiple quotes in one comment?

@Tropwen.....brilliant!!

Instead of hitting the "quote" button, hit the little button next to it with the quotation mark. On the last quote hit the "quote" button.

I don't think I've ever been so intrigued on someone's nickname before. Impressive!

Love NC by the way. I grew up in Virginia Beach VA, and would often spend some time in the Outter Banks, NC. That's the place I want to retire one day. I don't know what it is about that place, but every time I'm down there I don't have a care in the world... It amazes me...

My name actually goes back to when I was seven or eight years old, when I was the youngest original member of a hip hop crew called Intense Heat. We embraced the hip hop lifestyle completely, breaking, bombing graffiti and DJing. Even though this name has a strong, personal meaning for me going back to 1978, it was only by chance that I chose it as my poker name. I was creating my first poker account on SpadeClub, and trying to decide what I should use for my name, when I looked down at my open notebook and saw this.
Heat small
It's funny how well it actually fits. One of my first online poker friends started calling me "Heat" for short, which caught on, and I have always been an intense individual.

While I like a good clever poker name, I think your name should be unique, and fit you as a person. However, you may not want to use a name that is too descriptive of your style of play. Names like "Sir Bluffalot" or "H.R. Bluffnstuff" might be clever, but you probably want to choose something else if you tend to bluff alot. I've actually been in hands where I was thinking that my opponent was full of bull, but that it might still be prudent to fold to his all-in river bet, when I noticed that the player's name was something like "Big Bluffer". So I called, and found out that the guy actually was a big bluffer.

You also might want to be careful not to open yourself up to ridicule by using a name like "BestPlayaEva" if you are, in fact, the worst player ever. I was chatting with a friend and mentioned this to her. "You're not that easily fooled?" she asked. "No, not fooled," I replied. "Maybe a little confused. Even conflicted". For instance, I was playing with a player named "DonkeyKilla" one night. After a ten minutes at the table with this guy, I wasn't sure if I should be focusing on taking his chips or trying to contact mental health professionals on his behalf. I couldn't help thinking this guy needed an intervention. I mean if this guy was truly a donkey killer, then he needed to be placed on suicide watch immediately.

This thread reminds me of Stanley Ralph Ross, he would name characters in the old Batman tv series that would have a dirty meaning in a foreign language :)
