I've never really understood the concept of running good or running bad. Is it the same as variance? If not, what does variance mean?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

When you normally get your money in good, but you lose or you've been card dead for a while, pick up something like AQ and then run into AK

But that's just everyday poker. At what point does it become something else?

running bad should be, say a winning cycle longer than your average "good run" or losing cycle longer than average will be a "bad run" .
as a player here described in a live poker game he did not win a single hand in 3 hours. That is definitely so much bad luck, I ask him about it. he was telling that in the 1990´s he used to be a nice player but today he was horrible.

I have a good run not too long but 3 days winning almost every Tournament until the variance show up and then back to normal about 10%. :)

Maybe the guy is losing his stamina, getting tired, and making bad decisions. I imagine that can happen as one ages. Oh-oh, I'm getting up there, too. Too many gray hairs coming in recently.

Not sure what you meant about the variance showing up after a run of good results. That's another concept that I don't understand. Seems like most people use it as an excuse for losing. If you are making good decisions, then whether you win or lose is just a matter of probabilities and statistics.

Yeah, pretty much the same as variance - might even call it extended variance.
