I am an online poker player and I haven't really experienced playing live poker. I do want to try it but I have this impression that it is intimidating and that female poker players are not taken seriously. While others say that playing online poker is just a joke and that live poker is the real deal, I prefer playing online because I get to be myself, and my opponents (even though my username and my avatar shows i'm a female) can't and doesn't intimidate me.

Regardless whether it's online or live, what do you think of female poker players?

I think there's no much difference between good male and good female poker players for me.

I think female players can be just as good as male poker player's. But I give men the upper hand when playing poker.

What do you mean by people who say online poker is a joke? Live players who can't beat online poker I assume ?

Not sure what you mean by what you think of female players? I just look at any player whether male or female just as a poker player and try play accordingly. Nothing is different. I mean, lol you shouldn't think of players in terms of genders. There are terrible male and female players and good male and female players? Your question confuses me.

Why do you give men the upper hand ? What's the reasoning for that?

The only reason id give men the upper hand would be that for ever female playing the game, there has to be atleast 20-30 men.

Well yeah from numbers perspective there are more successful men but it also means there are more worse male players than females so it evens out by who has the upper hand. I'd say any competent female player, is as good as a competent male player.

and will smell better and be much nicer to have sitting next to you for a 10 hour session :D....obv in ref to live.

In general a poker player is a poker player, I think the fact that there are less females playing is very possibly a motivation for those who do play to give it some extra effort not to be horrible.... also saying that now i recall back to debs playing in a ladies event where she said they were all mostly horrible so I guess a fish is a fish as well lmao.

Females are better players on average and this gets overlooked often.

Males have a higher number of players so where there are many, many great male players, there are also very many terrible male players. Per capita, female players have more overall success.

I always think that because I'm short af, or I don't look like most poker players do, or I'm too ghetto, or because I say "please" or "thank you" with each action/statement, I get looked down on (hahahaha puns) at the table. It's just being self-conscious. It's like being uncomfortable in any setting, always questioning what people are thinking about you and what not. You have to remember why you're there; to be analyzing your opponents, not yourself. If you can be a mind without a body, then you need to do so.

Pretty much every time I play live, at least 2 or 3 players snicker and make jokes/comments about me saying "Make it 20, please," when I raise it up or "Thank you," when I receive my hand. I don't understand why being courteous is so funny.

Ben,

Be sure to say "thank you" to those who give you their chips and felt inclined to joke earlier :)

I think female poker players are as capable as male players, and may have an advantage over men who think otherwise. However, I'm one of the guys who forget that and tend to play stupid against women online and live. I even talked to Dr Tricia Cardner about it on another forum, and she mentioned in her own words that stereotyping is a common problem in poker; one that she has been able to capitalize on as a woman.

Regarding intimidation, be aware that live poker can be just as intimidating for male players the first time. I've seen men literally shake in a $1/$2 game, and it's still easier for me to buyin to a $200 tourney than a $200 cash game.

As you might expect, there will be men at the table who suffer from both a superiority complex and bad manners. I saw that online last Sunday in the chatbox when a woman won the Carbon 25k dollar frenzy.

Just smile (to increase their tilt), and keep taking their chips. :)

females playing poker

I think that it is great that more females are starting to get into poker. This is good for the poker community, plus every guy that plays poker would love to have a GF/ wifey that plays poker. So I think personally it is sexy when woman play poker. Poker is a game where people try to intimidate you but as long as you play your own/best game, you should do fine and be taking home the money at the end of a session.

I think it is admirable that some pioneers like Annie Duke and Vanessa Selbts paved the way for all of the females that are now enjoying and succeeding at the game.
I am almost certain that in the early days when there were few female players and it was an old boys club that they were harassed and the old boys tried to chase them out of the club.
Same thing happened to Police, Fire, Scientists, and especially Engineers in decades past but some brave women perservered and paved the way for the females of today to be able to do whatever they want.
My hat is off to all those strong women. Poker players ofr the other professions for making our society a better place.

I think many of them are hot. But they have a lot of money so you cant just get them like other b*tches if you have nice car or something... that sucks when you have to be charming instead. At least for those who are not.

I think they are not one bit different rarding skill, talent, skill etc. In fact they typically have an edge on people who don't think that the should play.
I have seen many really cool ladies running the tables. It s a breathe of fresh air and funny to watch when they take the chips from the haters on women in the game.

What do you mean by people who say online poker is a joke? Live players who can't beat online poker I assume?

saw a thread from another forum wherein a member thinks (and rants) that online poker is nothing but a joke and shouldn't be taken seriously. it's his opinion and obviously i think that's not true since i, myself, is an online poker player.

Not sure what you mean by what you think of female players? I just look at any player whether male or female just as a poker player and try play accordingly. Nothing is different. i just want to know people's opinion (in general) what they think of females playing poker. it's good to know that a lot think that female poker players are awesome and shouldn't be under estimated.

To me a player is a player, no matter what gender.
As far as online goes, nobody will know if you're male or female, unless you tell yourself and even than it could be misleading.
You say your avatar and screenname show you're female, but if I see a pictured woman in an avatar it doesn't tell me anything and tbh I don't care at all.

Live is another story ofc, but if you feel intimidated, let it be because you might not be the best player and not because you're female.

About female players being awesome, some are and some are not, just like there's awesome male players and others who are plain bad.

Tbh, if I were playing live (I'm male) and would have for example Dakota or Hotjenny to my left, it's pretty clear I'm the one who'se gonna be intimidated.

If you're at a table full of men, no matter what they do, play your best, smile and take their chips.

On a sidenote, if I watch live-events I always root for the females running deep because when they do, they prove it's a game for everyone no matter what gender and it's skills that count (and some luck ofc) but not not such things as gender, race or whatever else.
I'd love to see more females at the table, not because I'm looking for a date, but more because they have the same right as males to play the game without feeling intimidated.

I agree with most ppl here, female players can be as good as male players. But I think female players are a bit more "bluffy" and sometimes can be too agressive. :)
