I have read the poker forums, strategy articles, and have a folder in my e-mail for the Roy Rounder tidbits. To this point, I play mostly low stakes MTT and in the last year have not played a lot, maybe 10K hands, and have about $300 into it with poker tracker and poker ace HUD and bankroll which goes up & down between $50-$100. I am tired of playing hands thinking that I know what I am doing and getting my ass handed to me because I missed something like being out of position, choosing a poor starting hand, etc. What is the best book for a person to start with? There are so many out there I could use some help sorting through the mess.

Harrington on Hold 'em is pretty damn good in my opinion. Concentrates on tournaments, too, so it should be right up your street.

Well since you are talking about online I am not sure if this book will work... BUT..I gotta tell ya...this was and still is my bible for cash tables.

Miller-Small-Stakes-Holdem.jpg

Unlike many other books about small stakes games, it teaches the aggressive and attacking style used by all professional players. However, it does not simply tell you to play aggressively; it shows you exactly how to make expert decisions through numerous clear and detailed examples.

It teaches you to think like a professional player. Topics include implied odds, pot equity, speculative hands, position, the importance of being suited, hand categories, counting outs, evaluating the flop, large pots versus small pots, protecting your hand, betting for value on the river, and playing overcards. It also has over fifty hand quizzes that present you with common and critical hold ’em decisions. Choose your action, then compare it to the authors’ play and reasoning.

It is a good place to start if you are talking about your cash game...tournament games...Super System is probally the best I have read.

Read the Harrington on Hold 'Em books. They'll best help you for MTT play. I'll tell you right now, though - don't expect your low level MTT opponents to fold or call according to what those books are telling you to do. The books are designed to make you a better player. They won't make your opponents stop playing poorly.

Small Stakes Holdem is a LIMIT poker book, and Super System is geared toward cash/ring games, NOT tournaments.

Anyway, depending on your level of experience just getting better "in general" will help your game.

Here are my recommendations for first books. Please note that "2+2 publishing" (Skalnsky, HoH, etc.) are NOT recommended as first books for anyone without prior math/academic/fairly extensive poker background.
