This is a discussion on From What Age Did You Start to Play Poker? within the online poker forums, in the General Poker section; Please let me know what age did you start to play poker & why.
I started to play it from 25yo.
I first played poker with my brothers when I was about 14. At first, my brothers took all my "money", but I soon became the best out of the 3 of us. I played online for real money when I was 18.
It's not the outcome of the hand that's important; it's how you got there that defines whether you played it well or not.

I started when I was 15 years old. First of all, I was playing only with virtual chips, because I did not know very well the rules and was very excited when I saw that I won the pot, regardless the fact it was with virtual chips.
Then, I started to participate only in freerolls and managed to win some dollars sometimes and was thinking that when I log-in with real money in real tournaments will smash them there, but usually was turned out in the reality and I was thinking that everything was rigged. Very beautiful times were.
All you young folks are just getting started!! Good for you. I hope you enjoy poker for the rest of your lives.
I am 74 years old; probably among a handful of senior citizens on Cardschat.
My poker 'career' began 15 years ago, when I was 59 years old. Heck. a lot of posters here are less than half that old.
A friend had started up a home game and when he explained the low limits the group was playing, I got interested. TV poker shows had gotten me interested, and I always saw the poker rooms when we were in casinos.
Maybe if I had started when I was young, like most of you, I would be a better player than I am now.
At my age, learning takes longer, and my senior attention span for studying new material has reverted to that of a four year old.
If you see me on the PokerStars tables, please take it easy on this old guy. Remember - respect your elders.
re: Poker & From What Age Did You Start to Play Poker?
I played for around an year when i was in the university during the poker boom but i did not try to learn anything about the game. Around 3 years ago i started playing again this time trying to actually learn how to play properly.
I play for a long time. I’ve been playing without interruptions for almost 10 years. In childhood, I played with friends at one time. Then we grew up and everyone went about his business. He took up poker for the second time in 50 years when the Internet appeared.
If I'm not mistaken, I started playing when I was 28 years old, but never wanting to be a professional, just to learn one more board game, little by little the poker fever was entering and one time I was about to classify a complete package in the Bahamas but I know it had been by pure luck, there I decided to learn a little more, and I have dedicated myself to playing it more the last three years here, now I am 40 years old and I really hope to become a pro one day although be online poker
First time i played was back when I was in college .. on my 19yo... But never really have much of a thought about it. It was just for fun and absolutely no money to play... It's funny because we used to bet snacks LoL..
but I only started studying this year, studying people while playing poker, studying the math behind it e these things.... Never made a good money from it but this is when I like to say I started playing poker for real, in 2020
Pretty young, about 11 years old. My dad taught my bother and I around the kitchen table. Played for toothpicks and then for change. Looked pretty easy to me so my dad suggested we play for our paper route money. By the end of the night he both my brother and my money. We had to pay for the papers the next day.
Was a sleepless night, not knowing what to say about not being able to pay. He gave it back the next morning but that was a heck of lesson.
"Luck comes and goes but knowledge stays forever."
I learned to play when I was about 4 years old. My grandmother would dump out the penny jar and play with me and my brothers. We got keep anything we won. It wasn't until I was in high school when I started to play regularly.
I must have been about six or seven years old when I first learned how to play poker. One of the games we had for our video game system was Vegas Something or Other. One or two players could play against up to three computer players. You could choose from 5 card draw, 5 or 7 card stud or blackjack. I learned the hand rankings as far as what beats what from the instruction book. But my father was the one that started teaching me poker strategy. He explained that I didn't have to play every hand. He told me I had a choice right from the time first cards were dealt as to whether or not to play the hand. He gave me a few pointers about hand selection. He knew at that age I wasn't ready to calculate odds in my head, so he expressed it in terms of chances, like if I was looking for a 4 and one of my opponents had one showing, it lessened my chances of catching one. Over the years, I learned different variations of poker. My favorite had always been Hold 'em. But it wasn't until I was thirty or so that I started trying to learn advance poker strategy.
None of you seem to understand. I'm not locked in here with all of you. All of you are locked in here with ME!
The bug to start discovering the world of poker was in my university days, at 25 years old. My interest was when I watched the EPT or WSOP tournaments in Las Vegas on television. Sometimes I dream that I could enjoy the exotic trips and places that one could get to know while playing this beautiful sport. And who knows, to be able to achieve another livelihood for my family in this way.
I am currently 40 years old, that is, it is already 15 years that I am linked to poker, with ups and downs, but always as a couple
i think i was like 20 years old. and i started because a couple of friends from work had home games and they called me once and since then i got hooked. we pretty much played almost every week. what good times that was
I started to get interesting playing about the time I watched the Gambler with Kenny Rogers! I was probably about 10 years old. The game on that movie was 7 card stud. Interesting game and although I didn’t fully understand it at the time, it still intrigued me. So, I’d play with my brothers and teach them and started to develop a liking for it. Of course my teen years saw other interests come and I didn’t revisit poker until I was in my early twenties. Then it became a good way to get together with buddies and still is mostly though I do play online a little more seriously now.
