I really enjoyed the Queen’s Gambit and would love the same kind of thing to be applied to poker. We do face the uphill battle of poker being taboo whereas chess is not, but when has a little controversy ever made TV worse lol
I agree to a point, but as I argued in another thread recently, there is hardly a more glamorous figure than James Bond and he is featured in key scenes in several movies playing card games in various
casinos. As I joked, I don't hear any critic let alone the public say ' I like Bond but for those deplorable poker scenes'!
Many within the poker world like casting themselves and the game in a dubious light, which is passe and needs to change. We all know, for example, Phil Helmuth and his antics and accept them. However, how is that behavior a draw to poker? In a similar vein, Dan Bilzerian getting hired as a GG ambassador is so short sighted it is mind numbing. For poker to expand and grow it needs to be seen with a broader perspective.
Success would rest on the quality of the project - script, casting, direction, and if these were good, the project would be viable and should therefore draw people to poker. This is why I mentioned 'Molly's Game' and Aaron Sorkin. Then of course you have 'Rounders' co-writer Brian Koppelman, who is a co-creator/writer on 'Billions'
'Billions' is over the top at times but a fabulous romp to watch. The cast is great and the directing slick. Imagine a well written poker series with the fast-paced energy and entertainment values of 'Billions' - it could be a huge draw to poker.
That said I think it would need a studio (movie or TV) to see the potential and develop the project rather than something which was attempted from within the poker industry itself. You would need a level of creativity which I am not sure the present poker industry possesses.
