Weird things people say about poker.

Yesterday I finish 6th for a 12 dollar ITM. I was knocked out by a 2 outer on the river. I was exited about my win, and when you are exited you generally like to tell people about it.

Well I told my friend expecting a response along the lines of, oh cool nice job congratulations. The answer I got " Well that's what happens when you play a game of chance. That guy had two cards to get, and he got one. You just can't be lucky all the time."

And then she just went on to explain how games of "chance" will catch up to you eventually, and how it's only a matter of time before you loose it all, and blah blah blah.

What about you CC? Any weird comments you would like to share?

Fairly common , I really have learned not to talk poker with many of my friends and family as they consider it akin to slot machines or any other game of chance.
On the other hand it is not all my family and friends just a large percentage (thank god my father enjoys the game) .
Forums like this are a good release and sounding board for your wins,losses and general interest in the strategy and love for the game.

Yea its not easy when your excited about an accomplishment and the people around you kinda dump all over it as if anyone could do it or make comments to diminish a person enthusiasm,way to go and keep it up!

I made it to the final round for a trip to wsop event 42 ,won 3 rounds leading up to it and when I mentioned it ,the replies I got were but did you make it to vegas though,brought me down,I felt I did so well and was proud of myself but after hearing such comments afew times and only placing in the middle of the final ive felt crappy like I did nothing,probably sounds lame I guess I just know how you feel when you don't have much support around you.

When I used to play on Full Tilt, having never deposited - my wife had trouble understanding that the $3,000 I won was real. Turns out she was right .

At least I withdrew a grand before Black Friday and enjoyed a "free" trip to Vegas.

My wife also think that it poker money aren't real, also doesn't believe in all that deposit to withdraw thing, she thinks that it's just another internet scam... Some live gamblers that i know think that online poker is ragged, that someone can see your cards and stuff...

Thats not the first time I've heard about seeing whole cards,
there are you tube video's where a guy claims he is able to hack into top pokerites and view your cards (which he successfully did)

my friends and girlfriend always say you might aswell play bingo, and I always bit to it,
no matter how much I make people just dont buy it i bring cash home stick a lump on the table for her but still NO

Poker is like politics; you should never discuss your views with friends and family. Chances are they will say something you don't want to hear.
No matter how much money I win or (lose) most people think I'm just "gambling" same as playing the lottery. Not many people see playing poker as a potential "career".
Meanwhile I like to fantasize about making thousands a day steadily for ever.

You can always share stuff your excited about on CC and if you have a really close friend, gf, wife that you want to discuss your wins with that don't understand poker just :

For friend: Give them a beer order a pizza and pop the movie Rounders in that's where a lot of people started liking poker from and understanding its skill.

For GF/ Wifey : Just cuddle and pop the movie Rounders in girls usually like to watch Matt Daemon so I doubt they will reject it.

It's like most things, if you don't know anything about it then naturally your opinion will differ from someone who is an expert. People that don't play poker have different ideas on the game than all you sharks!

Dudemanstan.....not only is it a game of chance but I've been informed that gambling at poker is a SIN! Don't we know that we are going to hell because we play poker?

Yeah, it's sick how people think poker is simply a game of luck, just because it has the image of a casino imprinted on it. If you wait for your cards and extract value from them, then it turns into a game of skill.

friends that support u will always listen 2 what u have 2 say. and on that note, i lost a few friends because of poker. i would win big money on FTP and when i tell them about they would all act like "IF" there interested in what i'm saying,but when it came to play live poker at my house they would always give s*** when i would beat them, and it got so bad that they started calling me a cheater, cause i would always win, well most of the time... But who the hell cares i dont want friends like that, but the sad part is that i known this friends for over 20 years...

In Romania , almost everywhere , poker is seen as a "devil's game". If you tell somebody in mature that you play poker he will say that you have to go to church because this is a sin. I don't believe this crap. It's true that it happens to lose or win a pot only because of luck but strategy is the most important in poker. Strategy and patience...nothing evil.

I play poker for a living, and the classic line I get from family and friends that still don't understand that you can make money for this game.
Me: I made $5k this month playing poker
Them: Yes but how much did you lose?
Me: I'm MEAN PROFIT!

i've always thought poker money is unreal for this very reason.

sounds like your friend has trouble losing and makes an azz of himself when he does was drinking involved? (maybe there is the prob).....being a friend is calling him out with this bad behavior and resolving it to manage your real life friendship(important).
family wont play poker with me anymore cuz i win all the time(they too say i cheat) ......but I'm keeping them!
