It depends

Hi Azn712,
It depends on where your playing, what game and who your playing with, it sounds to me your referring to freerolls maybe, then the luck weighs more, too many novice players and too many players willing to call on absolutely anything.
Now in lets say a $30 sit-n-go the odds weigh more as you won't get too many players call on crap and risk losing thier $30, chances are they are fairly advanced players who play the cards pretty much to rule, not always the case but generally speaking that's how i'd weigh the luck against the odds.
Good luck :)

LOL as of lately I would say luck weighs more. We all know the reason by this "It happened to me again".....*Sigh*. Now I am 1-24 against luck the last few money games.

If you are a good player...and many people over-estimate their skill...the ODDS definately outweigh luck.

Granted if you are playing in big freerolls, even if you play the best you can, you will take bad beats and need some luck to get through the minefield of bad players.

In a real tournament or cash-game situation, odds/skill heavily outweigh luck. You NEED to get lucky to WIN a tournament. There is no doubt about that. However, without skill, you won't be in a position to get lucky that often.

Odds/Skill build a chipstack, luck wins tournaments (not the final hand, but puts you in a great spot to win).

In the long term odds are in favour to luck, but in short term luck is in favour.

If you look at your stats over 10000 hands youll see that if you done your odds calc right, you win. Hope you know what I mean.:egg:

Luck vs odds

Anyone that has won, or even done well in a tournament will likely tell you they needed both somewhere along the line. I know the 3 times I have made the final table in the last little while, I needed luck now and again and I am not one to be afraid to admit it.

In the long run like someone else has already said, odds will beat out luck. But anyone needs both in order to win big and do well.

I recently have been doing good in multi-tournaments. I have to agree that luck is probably good through 2/3rds of the tournaments, the last 1/3 when you get to better players is skill. The one thing I have learned to control in the couple of months to improve my finishes is stack control, it has helped me a bunch. All freerolls have many unskilled players, but most get out in the first hour, then you get to the better players.

Luck? or Bad Luck

If your playing freerolls, luck is certainly a part of it. Keep in mind that all poker hands are relative. If I can avoid playing in the first 10 min of a freeroll I will. In a freeroll no one has risked anything and like the posts before mine say, it does make a difference. If you want to the odds to prevail your gonna have to risk something. I think of poker as 10% cards, and 90% mental. If there isnt anything in that 90% mental to hold them back, we know what happens then.
