My friend has been offered a sponsorship by a poker tour.

In negotiating the terms of her deal, the manager just keeps putting the ball in her court and wants her to suggest her own deal, and then he will counter offer.

Neither of us really know what sponsored players "get" for wearing logos, or how they are compensated (if it is by results, by media coverage, a % of event buy in?)

any thoughts? FYI, we need to know this ASAP.

We were thinking a full buy in to the Main Event of that particular poker tour, plus a partial buy in of other "major" events. 10% 20% 25%?

Please feel free to PM me about this.

Her duties include wearing 2 patches during tournaments, handing out flyers on breaks and tweeting and facebooking during tournaments and generally "talking up" the poker tour while at tournaments.

She also is an accomplished consistent tourney player, but basically an unknown except locally.

(and just in case you are wondering, it is not me)

What sponsors do varies widely - but for all of that I would ask that all of her buy-ins be paid when she does that - and compromise at no less than 50%. That is a lot to ask of her for just 20-25% imo.

Yeah what dakoto-xx says is true it varies widely.

However, I do know an ex pokerstars online pro who was literally just bought into every UKIPT main event every year at like 4 stops per year at £700+ a time, no idea if he was on a salary though too but yeah I think asking for full buy-in is fair enough but he had to pay his own travel and hotels that was the downside to it.

Because they are asking for her to propose a deal and they will negotiate, just go for what you can just try add a hotel stay in there. So I'd just start with Full buy-in to the event, + hotel and they might just say we can do buy-in etc rather than if you ask for just buy-in they might say "We will pay only 50% of buy-in" Certainly no harm in proposing more when it's going to be negotiated anyway, that's the idea.

Agree with debs too, certainly wouldn't want to take less than 50%.

I wouldn't ask for the hotel - I think that would be very unusual except for big pros. I know too many sponsored players who definitely don't get their hotels paid for.

I guess it is not that common to get 100% paid because we see too many people with multiple sponsors.

I could see it being as low as 20% - but not having to do all they are asking of her per your pm.

Because of that alone I would ask for a percentage per event - not the main event and then a smaller percent of others. Plus - with it being her first time she doesn't want most of her benefit tied up in 1 game in case something goes wrong.

It is very lame of them to put the ball in her court btw.

I have no experience with this but a lot of experience negotiating deals.
Always aim high to start. Ask for way more than you expect to get and make them think they have won when you settle for less.
A little bluff never hurts your game. :)

It is very lame of them to not propose something - it's like they are playing will you screw yourself? Because of that I say ask for hotel (and per diem) - you have to make them say no at some point since they are unwilling to offer anything. How would you feel if they gave you everything you ask for? Probably really good - at first. Then you start wondering if you should have (could have) got more. They put you in this position so don't feel ashamed or shy to ask for a little more because they might say no. Your objective should be to make them say no to something.

Thanks for all the advice guys. They worked out a deal. Maybe she could have gotten better, but she is happy with it for now since it's her first sponsor.

I wanna know what's my manager cut?

;)

If she is happy with the results, then mission completed. Good luck to her.

I have no experience, but after you get the big stuff lined out, ask for something silly like a sorted bag of only red M and Ms for each tourney. Be a diva.

based on the equal exchange:
how many pll does the sponsor expect to get seen from your friends' table logo, or online update?
think if you know the number, you may find some general data from ad rate, and convert the amount by yourself.
good luck.

PS: the more people potential to watch that event, or TV broadcast involved, the more sponsorship your friend may expect to get.

good luck there.
