If there is an odd number of chips in the pot and in a split pot there is the lowest denomination of chip that cant be divided. Is there a rule as to which player it goes to or is it at the players discretion/courtesy?

The odd chip goes to the high hand. When there are two or more high hands the odd chip goes to the left of the button. In stud games, the odd chip goes to the high card by suit.

As far as I know the player who made the call gets the extra chip in flop games, because the other player will honor his hard decision to call the river raise and end up with a split pot...

From Robert's Rules.

If two or more hands tie, an odd chip will be awarded as follows:

(a) In a button game, the first hand clockwise from the button gets the odd chip.

(b) In a stud game, the odd chip will be given to the highest card by suit in all high games, and to the lowest card by suit in all low games. (When making this determination, all cards are used, not just the five cards that constitute the player's hand.)

(c) In high-low split games, the high hand receives the odd chip in a split between the high and the low hands. The odd chip between tied high hands is awarded as in a high game of that poker form, and the odd chip between tied low hands is awarded as in a low game of that poker form. If two players have identical hands, the pot will be split as evenly as possible.

(d) All side pots and the main pot will be split as separate pots, not mixed together.

In our home game we actually flip a coin for it. If its a 3-way or more split it stays in the middle.

Rock paper scissors. If you don't like that you can always roshambo for it.

i agree with hambone8705. i like flipping a coin or drawing a high card.

These are not the rules if your gonna play right you gotta play by the rules so there is never any confusion.

These are the rules that pretty much every card room goes by.

I'm a professional dealer, if that counts for anything. And it's exactly what Stu_Ungar posted.

If your home game has some other method that's consistent and everyone's happy with it though I don't see any problem.

Guess I've been splitting the odd chips wrong.

What we use to do in my old group of people that I'd play with at Side Pockets is knife fight for the leftover chips, with our left hands tied to each other.
