This is more relevant to live play but i was wondering what amounts you tip the dealer, does it vary from casino to casino and would it depend on the pot you have just won. For me the bigger the pot the bigger the tip..

It's open to argument. I consider any tips I pay to be a cost (just like the rake). Is your edge over your opponents sufficiently good enough to make a long term profit after these costs? This thought process makes me a mean tipper!

I was actually wondering this myself the other day and was going to make a post asking the same question.

I once saw on a Poker After Dark cash game ( at least i think ) Tom Dwan Tipped a dealer when he got knocked out, wasnt tipping during the game. Didnt say how much though.

I guess just base it off how much you are winning/losing and what the stakes are. But definitely always tip your dealer.

for your basic $1-$2 thru $2-$5 games

$1 per pot
$2-$5 for big pots

really, more than $2 is an indulgence.

It just goes to show alot of people are stingy when it comes to doing what is honest. Tipping dealers is just a part of the game. If you cant afford to or resent to, dont play! If a dealer ships you a smaller size pot, I understand you cant tip too terribly much. But when he ships you a monster pot, tip righteously. Ive been a dealer 10 years + and if there is one thing ive seen more than anything. People that dont tip accordingly tend to get slaughtered the majority of the time in the long run. To be honest, I thoroughly enjoy watching these type of players felt. Its what I call instant karma. If you are one of the "players" that tips 1 dollar on 100 just because you cant break the white chip in half, you are a part of the problem. Please pick up another form of leisure. Tip for service. Tip because its right. Or dont and watch what the poker gods get involved.

I think it's overrated, as long as your tipping them something that is all that matters, it is pretty sad the higher stake players tip less than some of the low stakes. I would not tip for less than a 15bb pot.

Here in South Korea, I see players tip the poker dealers ~95% of the time, but when it come to the casino table games, regardless if its blackjack or baccarat, etc. a much smaller % of the Asians tip. But that goes for cabs and restaurants as well, as tipping here is unnecessary and almost frowned upon.

I'd fell guilty if I didn't tip, so sometimes I have to sneak the tip on the table after friends have got up to leave, lol.

Superstitious much? You really think that not tipping is going to bring you "instant karma" from the "poker gods"? LOL. Maybe you should play some craps where you can be alongside like-minded individuals who share similarly ridiculous superstitions.

I don't tip because tipping casino dealers is illegal in my country. Besides, I wouldn't tip even if it were legal because I believe that it's the responsibility of the employer to pay their staff fairly. We're here to play poker and we already have to pay to play (initial seating charge + rake taken from every pot). It's not our responsibility to subsidise the dealers' wages if the employers are too stingy to pay them properly. No one should be paid so poorly that they have to rely upon tips to make a decent living.

I heard that here where I live, dealers in the casino are payed really low wages, because they expect that there will be tipping.
All their tipping goes in a pot and will be divided by the whole staff. This is then seen as a part of their salary and they have to pay taxes on it (unlike other places like restaurants).

Therefore I think here people should be tipping if they go to a casino and if they don't feel like, just stick to online poker :)

it depends on what country you are in. Places like Australia and germany do not tip, anyone, in anything as far as I know. But in these places the workers get paid much more because of tax implications and business expenses. Here in the USA dealers make either minimum wage (about $8-$10/hour) or service industry wage ($3.25/hour) depending on the state and poker room. If this is the case where you play then you should tip as you would a waitress.

The average in USA is about $1-$5 per winning hand depending on how much it is, typically on winnings over $20. If the tips were not good the better dealers will go somewhere else, then your room is stuck with bad dealers - and no one wants that - so do as you will, but realize that without the tips you will have many issues with game control and speed because your dealers will suck.

You may think it is easy to deal poker, but it is a very complicated job overall, and you will get what you pay for.

You are dead on Detroit. I have never played cash games at a casino, but my son has and he pretty much follows your suggestions. Tip the dealer and he is much more likely to cut you some slack if you make a mistake at the table with bets or hands. Don't tip, and they aren't too inclined you cut you slack if you aren't paying attention.

This is silly.

$1 for $100 pot, is not bad. Probably half the money was hero's anyway. So we profit $50 or $60, and give you a dollar. That's pretty standard. Bigger pots, I tip more.

You should be happy you just got a dollar for 5 mins of work.

+1 I like online poker because you don't tip and usually lower rake. On to the question. I look at a couple of factors. What is the minimum wage, how much do I make an hour, what hourly would drive to the median wage for location, how many at the table are tipping, and how much I have won in an hour (I have to make a profit too). I have a normal 9 to 5, and a dealer is just doing their job. They should be compensated fairly.

If they are a good dealer, then they should be dealing 30 to 40 hands per hour. If everyone is tipping $1 USD per hand, then the dealer is making an hourly higher than most Americans. Granted not everyone tips so I keep that in mind.

With all of the data above, at the end of every hour that I play I will over compensate for the dealer to have a fair hourly. If everyone is tipping generously and dealer is making a high hourly, then I will tip the average for the hour.

It's a lot to keep track of, but nits don't play many hands, haha.

Basically correct as far as Australia goes. There are some industries here where tipping is semi-common (mostly in restaurants) but in general tipping isn't expected behaviour. And yes, part of that is likely because we have a much higher minimum wage than places like the USA.

And while tipping in general isn't common, tipping casino dealers is actually banned, because it's believed to present a game security issue. casinos even set up stings from time to time to ensure that staff aren't taking tips off the gaming floor.

Must be a rich man dealing cards. I agree but at the same time I was raised that you should demand a tip for your service as if it is a MUST and are entitled to a tip.

You are still receiving a handsome hourly wage and the tip feature is indeed optional. Who knows maybe the player is stuck a bunch of money and needs all the chips he can get.

However having said this, I always tip my dealers except for when I meet a dealer who feels entitled to the money I am putting on the line.... then it's not about the tip or the money it's about the attitude.

Remember when you receive tip/gratuity smile and say thank you. If you don't then that's fine as well.
