When I was a student I used to play poker as well to earn some cash and pay for my expanses (and a lot of partying) . It wasn't much, probably 350 a month extra in cash but I felt like a king. My family and girlfriend we're okay with it as long as i didn't spend to much money on it (they didn't believe i started freerolling). After 13 months of doing it I got too greedy and ruined my whole bankroll, needed to find a proper job to cover my expanses.
That is my story and my family and friends understood what I was doing (I think) and never heard anything negative from them. Only thing i can recommend is not to hide these things from you girlfriend or close family, there is no taboo on it and hiding the truth is always worse in my opinion. Honesty is one of the most important qualities . Maybe even introduce them to what you are doing, let them watch for a little time so they know your responsible in what you are doing.
Good luck with your poker earnings and read up on bankrolls so you don't make the same mistakes I did 6 years ago .
