A super user is typically a former employee who has access to the poker site's database, and can see other's hole cards, etc. I'm sure someone else can give a much more eloquent explanation, but that's it in a nutshell. To my knowledge, this has only happened once, at UB...or was it Absolute Poker? I'll have to Google it, or there is a thread here somewhere that goes into the scandal a bit further.

It only happened on A.P/U.B those are the only sites I've heard of scandals happening on...

I really don't doubt that A rogue employee could do such things on Most sites, yet other sites have added measures...

I really do forget what those measures are but someone could answer that question

Stop worrying op, online poker is only rigged with superusers accounts on Stars, FullTilt and Cake poker afaik. After the AP/UB scandal they obviously had to cleanup their image somewhat so only Phil gets to see peoples holecards beause he can dodge aces baby!

I heard there were some very secure poker sites in the Phillipines and one in particular in Uganda, but its still having problems breaking into mainstream poker because all the nits wont trust the guy who phones them up asking for their bank account, sort code and date of birth.

Actually, it's pretty unlikely that just one rogue employee could pull it off, at least for any serious amount of time.

The fallout from the UB/AP scandal has shown us that for their system to work they needed multiple people and the highest levels of the site's management to be involved. IIRC there was actually only one programmer involved, the rest were management types. They need the people higher up to tell all the underlings "It's OK, go about your business" when they started to notice strange things happening. One rogue employee without management support would almost certainly be caught and stopped before they could get a chance to steal much.

A rogue employee stealing loads and loads of hand histories and using them to get a detailed history on people without seeing their hole cards in real time is another matter entirely though...

FYI - a "superuser" is technically a system administrator that has what is called "root" priviledges. Any computer system has one. Therefore, any on-line poker site has superusers. Quite literally, they are God to the system.

The key is the trust that you have in these types of people. Technically, if you take an on-line gaming site, the administrators should be prohibited from playing on it, be paid enough that they won't have to look for money elsewhere, and go through a thorough background and personality assessment prior to granting them root access.

These types of problems are not limited to on-line gaming sites. Even something like Amazon has to worry about compromising their customer's personal information and prevent the system from superuser fraud.

The UB scandle happened several years and the industry learned from that. Its worth noting that the security procedures in place were no more lax than the types of security procedures your own bank would have been using at the time.
