Last night I played in a meetup group's home poker game. (Not sure if the concept of meetup is USA only--basically an online regional forum where you can find people who live near you who share an interest with you.)

It's the first time I've played in a home game in a good number of years and it was a lot of fun. It's given me a taste for wanting to play more live local poker games (small tournaments or cash).

My question here is what suggestions do you have for finding other games or figuring out where local "pub games" might be? Are there other online sites to help locate live games? I think starting with a pub game is better, because I'm wary of finding an invite for a home game on something like Craig's List and heading to some strange address with people I don't know.

What do you think?

This is exactly how I started playing live poker. Start out with a group you are comfortable with and then network, network, network to find the other local games. Definitely agree that you have to have some common sense about going to new places; this is where the networking comes in. If you find other local games but can't find someone to go with you then try staking the place out; park outside and watch the comings & goings. Now as for pub leagues, try some Google searches for 'poker pub league' and add in a major city in your area.

I would be too nervous about playing with total strangers I met online. I guess you have to put a lot of effort into finding a group you feel you can trust and I just don't have time for that.

Russian legislation prohibits the organization of games for money (without a license, even for individuals), but does not prohibit participation in the game ... The laws are so strange ...

I went to one home game that was posted on Craig's List and I brought 2 friends along with me because there was no way I was going to the house of strangers by myself.

I think you're right that it can take some time to investigate a game and that's not always time we have to invest.

You may want to spread the news among your new poker buddies that you would like to play on a regular basis. I live in a very rural area and some of the games I play in I must travel 40 to 50 miles just to play but I think its worth it for I love live poker. If you can host a game you may also find it easier to get a game going as many don't want to host.:D:D

That’s the plan at the moment. To go with the “friends of friends” kind of approach.

I’m willing to host if I know the people, but not willing to host a game of mostly strangers.

Maybe visit local pubs and talk to the regulars. these games are usually kept secret and played during the less busy times of the week. I had people coming to my house requesting people to get a game going. If anyone lives in the New York/ New Jersey area let me know. Im always getting invited to poker related events.

If I am not mistaken, aren't they illegal?

If not, how can you find them?

Check out the Bar Poker Open website (www.barpokeropen.com). They have a list of pub poker leagues around the nation. Or google the name of the biggest city you live near with the words pub poker and see what comes up. I've been playing in a local league for years and it is a lot of fun.

I have long ceased to understand what the government really wants ... It would be logical to legalize this activity and receive taxes, but - no. :stupido3:

It’s about control in reality.
