Just an FYI with more and more poker players playing hours of online poker a day... A recent study has found poker players are more at risk for diabetes, heart disease, and cancer with the risk factors directly relating to obesity and tobacco use. It found about. 39% of poker players use tobacco (national average is around 29%) and poker players have a higher than normal BMI. Just a friendly reminder to take a break once in a while and exercise you will feel better and play better

Well if they'd hurry up and release google glass, with poker Apps, then maybe I wouldn't have to sit around as much to play poker.

none of us get good at poker overnight, it has to become an unhealthy obsession with a sprinkling of luck on top with that comes hours and hours sat down (eating, drinking) .

I always have been into sport and training/boxing fortunately enjoyed it which makes it an easy thing to do.
But I play my best poker when im feeling fresh fit and healthy by a country mile, thats a fact.

definately agree that we should all look to exercise 4-5 times a week to keep healthy and release feel good endorphins into our body - which is a good thing for any competitive game regarding your mind set and added confidence

It's not really surprising when you think about it. During the summer, when players should be outside more and being active, they're inside and sitting down for hours on end. In the winter, same-same. It's hard to burn off the calories and your internal clock's ability to tell night from day is totally off kilter.

that's crazy, I like to have a nice chew when im playing online, I nice dip of cope fine cut and some poker, nothing better. Personally I can see this study being true, but as for stats and all that stuff usually I don't even pay attention, I don't believe half the numbers media says to people and how and where they gather their information. But for this one I can totally see some of it being true.

Cart before the horse here maybe?

The study examined poker players and compared this subgroup to general population numbers. I would hypothesize that those who are drawn to poker are more likely to be ones who are less likely to be the physically active types. I do know a few exceptions but by-and-large, poker players ain't the outdoorsy types.

To take my hypothesis one step further, I would say poker players are on par with the subgroup of the rest of Americans who sit down for most of the day and dislike exercise. These people are also more likely to smoke.

I wonder what type of players were also interviewed for the study. 40% tobacco seems high if we're talking online players.

If we're talking live players, maybe that's a bit different.

When I read the headline, I thought of an Onion type headline of my own "Study Finds People Unhealthy." ;)

Good point SHI. I would agree, as with any job or hobby where you are sitting down all day, a person is more susceptible to being over weight. When you really get into a grinding mode there just isn't much time for exercise. I will sometimes have to take a break from poker because I just don' have the time to do anything else and it overwhelms my schedule .

I miss playing ice hockey and other fun stuff that helped keep me fit, but realistically, I can keep playing poker as long as I can hobble over to the table, or if online poker remains on the road to the up and up, the putter. So long after I must give up my motorcycling and paintballing and ninjutsu, I will still be able to be a degenerate( but still badazs) poker player.

Well it is good to know that, but what is the difference between online poker player and stay home programmer or full time writer, or even gamer? So it's not poker what is problem there, it is sitting in front of computer all day drinking soda eating pizza, myself have slightly unhealthy habits with eating fast food and drinking beer but i tend to train at least 5 times a week, and thinking to adjust eating a bit.

Everyone can find time to do few sets of situps/pushups few times a week or took a powerwalk or jog now or then...

Actually Poker has started to make me healthier. I realise how certain foods and exercise, even things like posture, help my game. I notice I lose a lot more hands just by simple things like slouching and playing in bed late at night. It's more just a case of attitude. If I am determined enough to take my game and environment seriously, then it gives me an advantage over someone else's brain just going through the motions.

For example, today I made a significant bankroll grinding freerolls during the day 9-5, eating nutritious foods and exercising, and by the evening now I am exhausted from pushing myself mentally and physically. Stupidly my over-confident self now decides it is a good idea to just relax and play a quick cash game before bed. Meanwhile someone else is just starting their day and is more determined than me.

Only then is when it gets unhealthy for me... but it is something I am aware of and working on.

I just can't understand this. Between kicking the crap out of the cat, beating the bejesus out of the dog, tossing TVs and appliances out of windows, punching holes in walls and overturning furniture I haven't the wind left to smoke and too exhausted to lift a cigarette even if I wanted to.

Forgot to mention that it ain't easy on the eyes either. Staring at the monitor(s) for hours on end is not good for ocular health. Remember to take breaks and look around very few minutes but it's still hard on the peepers.....
