Hey guys. So I'm at my local casino playing low limit stakes ($1/$2) and I'm sat on the button with JJ. There are 7 people at my table. 3 limpers enter the pot. I count out a $12 raise, (3 chips, a $10 chip and 2 $1 chips) pick up my chips in one stack and place them down over the white line.
The SB folds and the BB checks. (The BB in this situation is a regular who is known by his first name to casino staff which I was uneasy about considering what occurred next). I asked why he was checking when I had raised the pot to $12. He said my raise only counted as a call because I didn't announce my raise (which I will always be doing in future from now on). I ask the dealer if my raise is legitimate to which he responds it isn't. I ask for a ruling from floor staff to which they agree that my bet didn't constitute a raise, only a call. The BB accused me of string betting, despite me only having one constant forward motion with my chips.
So, did I string bet/just call or was my move a legitimate raise and I've been bullish***ed by a reg looking to angle who's been backed up by casino staff?
Just fyi, I took down the pot on the flop with a set.
Anyway, this 'string betting' fiasco happened two more times at the table but only against this one opponent. Everyone else at the table saw my raises as raises and not just calls.
Any answers are greatly appreciated and good luck on the tables!

Yes, if you don't verbalize the raise, unfortunately it is considered a string bet because what your hands and mouth are saying is seen as inconsistent. If you think about when you're just calling, you usually do it without saying anything. So when you put chips into the pot, signalling a raise, it was seen as contradicting you saying nothing, which communicated to others that you were calling.

Sorry, I'm not sure if my answer makes complete sense! These responses explain string betting a lot better: https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100427150132AAq8ioY

I am guessing that we are either missing some information or the dealer and player are complete cheats.
1. I have to assume the odds of them being total cheats is low, because of how blatant it would be, so therefore I believe we are missing information.
2. If it was ruled by the floor even more so a reason we may be missing something here.
(did you ask why it was ruled a string bet? - you should always ask why if you do not understand a floor call)
One thing we may be missing is that the poker room may not use a betting line. If this is true then anytime you count chips out in front of your cards it is your action (which is why you will see many players count out chips to the side of their cards or behind them). If this is the case, the moment you dropped one chip to count out the call was made, and adding to that stack can be determined stringy - especially if you dropped them individually from another stack. This is probably what happened.
The only other thing I can think of is that you did two motions forward with chips and didnt realize it - but the above is more likely.

It is a good idea to always say raise when you raise, this way you can never have an issue. I know it seems amateurish, but in reality it is the opposite.

If this story is true, the dealer and floor are clueless. It can only be string betting if you first put in the calling chips, then try to raise, and didn't say raise before putting in the calling chips. Otherwise, how is it stringing along if it's just one motion?
