I want to start playing poker again( online and live cash games) but can only put 1000$ in to start my bankroll. Here is my problem, I don't have patience to play micro or real low stakes. I like to play 3-5 no limit or 1-2 at the least. I know playing these stakes with such a small roll, I can easily go busto in my first session. If I were to play lower stakes online, I would not play my normal style because the stakes bore me and will likely call a lot of 5$ raises getting me involved in too many pots with marginal hands where I can also go busto! I want to have better bankroll management this time around and play the games I am most successful at. Ive never really tried building a roll from scratch like this, it fir the most part just happened when i play solid or run good in a long session at the casino. ill go in with 500 and leave with 5k, then i eventually build that up to 10 to 15k and stop or buy alot of expensive things or get real careless and loose it all! Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

I [..]
  • can only put 1000$ in to start my bankroll.
  • want to play 3-5 no limit or 1-2 at the least. I know playing these stakes with such a small roll, I can easily go busto in my first session.
  • want to have better bankroll management this time around.

You clearly already know all of these statements are incompatible. You either need to accept that you're not willing to have better bankroll management or you need to accept playing lower limits to build your bankroll until you can afford these stakes or you need to find another $3,000+ to put in your bankroll before you play.

Personally, I don't care if you play $1/$2 (or even higher) on a $1,000 bankroll. You are not me. It doesn't hurt me at all if you go busto. But, you can't pretend that you're practicing better bankroll management when you're not really practicing any at all.

there is no escape from BR management if you want to keep seeing your BR getting bigger, $1K is good enough for you to start getting serious about your game, if u want action u can try headsup games and see how you do there, other than that i'd say you're just wasting your time and money, without BR management you will lose everything once you hit a downswing.

If you want a better bankroll management .. you need to control your self first time and second time ... Put a target on your bankroll . If u have x money it's ok / enough for that day . If you lose and lose , it's enough . You need to feel the game , cards .. I don't know how to explain . 1 k for start it's a huge bankroll for a beginner . Good luck , and improve your bankroll .

Im not really new to the game, I've had huge ups and major down swings in my poker career! I currently work full time but can always find time to play cards. Even working full time I'm still able to put in 40+ hrs on the table. My problem being is I may put In a 30 hr strait session then not play for a bit. Also when I run good and build a br, I can't stop putting in rediculous long hrs at the table. This is how my down swing starts, I end up playing too much and ignoring how productive I am. I have rediculous variances. In the end, I just don't know how people start over at such small stakes to build a br? It's like an MLB player going back and playing t ball after 6 months off! How do I enjoy these smaller stakes so I can play my normal ranges and not play reckless? I'm sure some of u started over in the past, what do u do to build up and not lose focus at the task at hand and not skipping these critical steps to ensure a safe br?

Gamblers gamble, winning poker players manage their bankroll, their time, their emotions, they work at improving their understanding of the game. In short, it's a job, not entertainment.
Enjoy the rush or enjoy the journey, it's your money & your time.
Good luck to you.

Your play shouldn't vary that much from level to level. Maybe some loosening due to lack of experience at lower levels but not like playing 7-2 os to a raise and a re-raise.

Yes, the more I think about this and read about br management, I've come to realize that this is a major flaw in my game and definitely throws my game off. If I play bigger games with a small br I tend to play to tight and don't make calls because I am putting too much of my roll at risk. On the other hand playing the smaller games with a large br, I play more loose and even careless! I've definitely have had some success but it never lasted because of this. I will definitely be working on this to strengthen my game!

You seem to know that you could use more patience and self-discipline, so instead of the self-defeating approach of telling yourself you don't have them (which implies you can't improve), work on improving them. I doubt there's a magic pill that will produce quick, dramatic results. It's slow and hard. But I do believe people can improve in both these areas. The first step is deciding that improving them is important enough to commit to working on them.
