Hi,

I know people will continue to play poker until the end of time, however, is it still possible to make a successful career in poker? All I hear these days is that "It's not how it use to be". I get that it's harder than before, although, this is relative because I didn't play before, so I don't know any different.

I'm thinking about a career change and I'm seriously thinking about devoting my life to poker as it fits in with my life goals and is well suited to the way I work.

Putting aside bankroll and game type for a sec, what are your thoughts on starting a Poker career in 2017?

All advice welcome!

Thanks

I'm also going to attempt poker as a career. I feel like it's doable and like anything else requires hard work and commitment. That said it seems like the general level of poker is very high these days, even at micro stakes.

There is no way to leave the bankroll aside because he is the most important in his career, anon. Professional life in poker is very subjective, if you earn enough to support yourself regardless of the amount you are a professional, so saying. Now becoming a high-level pro and large amounts in earnings is a lot more complicated than a few years ago. But if you have an object, study, do not be discouraged and do not give up. GG!

Dont! I've said it before I'll say it again, playing poker is fun, playing poker for the rent is NOT fun. If you enjoy playing poker then do so, without uprooting anything. No need to quit any jobs, rearrange lifestyles, or move in order to play professionally. Just continue to play for fun and if you get to a point where you've got more money than you know what to do with, and you've CONSISTENTLY been making more money playing poker than at your day job, then you can make decisions about turning pro. But do not, I repeat DO NOT make those decisions before said copious amounts of money have ever been made.

I can't say my intention is to become pro poker player, but if that turns out to be true in like 5 to 7 years, I wouldn't mind. At the moment it's still more for fun (even thou I only play for money, but small amounts) but when I improve and earn some big money, who knows, maybe that will become my carrer.

Hi Kiddk88 and welcome to Cardschat. I've been sick more ways than one during the past 1 1/2 months, so I may have missed your introduction. Kiddk88, I hope you can see the big picture of what all is involved in making such a big step. I want to ask you a few questions, and I hope you will answer them honestly so we all can see where you are at in order to be a help to you if or when you need us.

How much experience do you have playing MTTs and Cash?

At what level will you be starting at?

How much of a BR do you plan to start with? And do you have a clear picture of what BRM is and how important it is to keep it in mind at all times?

What, or where will be your main source for advice, and a place where you can dig up somethings that will answer some of your questions without asking?

What site will you be playing at? Or is there more than one?

Do you have a problem with tilt right now? Besides that problem, do you have any other problems that may interfer with your game?

Do you have any friends off line or online that plays poker, who you can talk with on things you may want to talk over one on one instead of posting it for everyone so you will get a lot of opinions?

Do you have a good place to play, where you won't be disturbed very little?

Will you be playing more than one table while playing MTTs or Cash. Which one do you like the best and is that the only one you play? Or do you like to mix them up like playing one MTT and two cash tables?

What does your family think about your plans to play poker for an income? Or are you planning to keep working and just play 3 or 4 hours in the evening?

Ok just one more even though there are many more. How many hours do you intend to play in a day's time.

To finish up, I want to assure you that every one of these questions had to be answered by you just like the rest of us had to do. You can answer these questions one at a time and don't go on until you have the answer clear in you mind. Setting each one as a goal would be a good idea, because when you reach and goal online or off will build your confidence more than you might think. GL Kiddk88 and get serious about your plans and never give up, because the very next day you may find 1 or 2 things that could be a big boost in your game.

if you are a professional in poker and it certainly can change your career and give life to poker but if you are professional and you play online poker then I would not advise you to do this

For everything has a path whether short or long, how many are playing to pass the time others are perfecting themselves to win
I believe that today it is difficult to win poker as it was years ago.
What many people say is that technology often gets in the way, many use systems to monitor all players' actions.
Is no longer a good player against the bad, it is who has more support to win with its programs, eye in the eye stayed in the past

Hey PapaC, sorry for the delay. Firstly, thanks for taking the time out to write your post, all advice is greatly appreciated.

In response to your questions my answers are as follows:

1) The majority of my experience is SNGs and MTTs. I have played some cash but not at a high level (Micros).

2) Id be starting at the bottom pretty much. I have been playing poker on and off for a few years but purely in a fun capacity.

3) I have £5,000 disposal income that I will use as my bankroll, initially. I have a little understanding of BRM but I know I need to look into this further.

4) I don't have a main source of advice at present. I use mainly forums and videos to bounce ideas off people. Potentially looking into a training site (Haven't sourced one yet).

5) pokerstars , 888Poker & partypoker.

6) No major problems with tilt. Mainly because of the levels I play and I have a coping mechanism.

7) No friends inside poker presently, I've joined a few forums to interact with people and bounce ideas off.

8) I've got an office that I can use. No noise disturbances.

9) I've been advised to play no more than 4 tables initially.

10) To give my initial question a little more context. I'm a consultant/contractor. I've got bills etc covered for 12-18 months. I rent out a flat also, however, I don't want to use this income.

Family don't agree with it.

I'd be looking to play through the ranks full time. I have no problems playing for larger periods of time, however, I need to think about this so I keep my performance optimal. Any advice here would be welcomed.

Hopefully this will give you a better picture of where I'm at.

Thanks,

Kiddk88

Don't get me wrong I wouldn't consider myself a pro by any means and understand there's a lot of risks involved.

I come for a Sales background and I've had to deal with very high pressured situations, long hours stats and variance. It because of these similarities my attributes will fit in accordingly.

I appreciate that I'm not going to be a profitable player initially and I'm willing to take a risk over the next 12 months to see where I'm at. I'd plan to play full time with an initial bankroll of £5,000, however I can extend this by another £7,000( I don't want to just dump all it into online poker accounts).

I'm with ya, I could use that change in my life as well. It's always been a life long goal to play poker as my career. Guess it's never too late for change, just hope it's for the better! All the best, good skill!

My results aren't great. Don't have much experience online (I've only been playing online for about a few months).

Haven't had any major cashes, however I have won a few small tourneys.

I'm sorry brother, but it doesn't seem like a great idea for you to commit to this idea right now because you just don't have the results to back it up. If you have had constantly grinding games for 2-5h a day with respectable results then you could think about quitting day job and play poker for a living. I don't know if you even have played for 8h straight multiple days, but if you're not completely in love with the game then it will soon become a nightmare.
I'm just a casual poker player, so don't take my advice too seriously. You should ask someone who is actually doing it.

Don't be sorry, I really appreciate your objectivity. This is more of a researching exercise rather than I'm dropping everything.

I know I need to increase my sample size before even considering a move.

Thanks,

Hello a advice dont say "because I didn't play before, so I don't know any different" why?
Because that is why History exist! books and articles that will teach you how it was regarding strategies, styles and experience.
As far as your main question, I will say it is very hard nowadays due to the huge amount of players and unknown experience of your contenders! :deal:
