After coming across this article about coding while standing up, I figured I would try it out. I actually feel that I have more energy standing up than sitting down. In fact, I feel I have too much energy and can't focus! (until I get too tired from standing lol)

So I'm going to try this with Poker. Unfortunately, I don't have enough data on myself to be able to tell if my game improves. Anyone want to give it a try? Right now I just prop up my laptop on a bunch of books so that my forearms are at about parallel to the floor.

I think if you try an hour or two a day of stand-up Poker for a week, you might have enough to say whether you at least feel better while playing. I'm going to do it anyways, but like I said I won't know for sure seeing as how I don't actually know how well/poorly my game is now...

I have once gone flying with the laptop, because my father moved furniture from inside to outside and the whole floor was full of funiture.
I walk relaxed with my poker match running the floor and don't look at the ground and a minute later I'm flying down.
Now I fear to stand up with my matches.

What? I am trying really hard to understand what you are trying to say here
Anyone want to explain this to me?

He fell over and because he was so busy concentrating on the poker he forgot to hit the floor and ended up flying. Douglas Adams said this was possible and now we know it is - the difficult bit is remembering not to remember to hit the floor as you're falling.

This is particularly hard because the act of remembering not to remember itself contains the act of remembering. A bit like telling yourself "don't think of the pink ballon" and hoping not to see the big pink ballloon floating in your minds eye. But now we know poker is the ideal distraction human flight will become commonplace and obvioously poker will gain in popularity - which can only be a good thing.

Trans Atlantic flying may have to wait though as I gather there are rules about playing in US and vice versa. Maybe the phenomenon of human flight will be enough to expedite the process of rule changes.

Anyway well done locha2013 - you've done a sterling job there.

The only time I walk/stand while playing poker is when the internet connection is getting a bit choppy and I have to make way to the router and keep an eye on it so it doesn't cut me out of my real money GAMES. Seriously, the worst thing is playing heads up and losing connection and the opponent raises you to next to nothing by the time you get back online. UGH.

not to change the subject though, but what about playing "outside" OP?

I think this might cause people to rush their decisions and cause mistakes.

Do you mean like literally outside or live? Playing outside would be neat (the beach even better!), but I'm trying to determine if playing while standing actually gives you an edge (mentally). I'm certainly finding this is the case at work (coding), and if it works while playing poker and the edge is significant then this would be a good thing!

@Rick Maybe, but I think that's controllable. I'm looking into this more on the longterm benefits of standing vs sitting, the effect of standing on your awareness while playing, and if your game can actually improves as a result.

Here's another article for anyone interested: http://jessenoller.com/blog/2011/09/16/the-standing-desk-experiment-5-months-in

I haven't read through the whole thing yet, but from what I've been reading and what I'm experiencing standing might actually lead to a (mental) edge. If it turns out you tilt less while standing then that can be huge?

Anyone agree?

Cool idea which might worth a try. The only problem is with back. I guess I would hardly be able to keep standing until a first break in the tournaments without my back starting unbearably hurt. :)

I have played sitting on chair and I have played standing and I can say that while I am sitting - I am more focused on poker. I don't know why - but that is!

lol @ Refinado that's a pro life hacker right there!

@anderson interesting, yea I feel like I have more energy, but that the added energy doesn't translate to focus :(

@topper the idea is that you set your desk up so that it is ergonomic (either prop them up on books/boxes or build a desk). Your arms should be parallel to the ground and your head should be straight like this guy

I wish I could afford a treadmill setup to play on. Tilt omg tilt! *Jacks up speed until the feeling passes or until I go flying off the end of the thing, cursing loudly.*

I think he's suggesting that it may be advantageous to combine online poker and yogic flying.

Yes absolutely, in this thread: https://www.cardschat.com/forum/tournament-poker-59/dealing-anger-232097/

I suggested exploring posture changes and controlled breathing to deal with tilts. When standing it's easier to manipulate posture - many proactive resourceful states occur whilst we are stood taking action, it's less likely that you'll settle in a slumped posture / posture linked to unresourceful state, easier to manipulate breathing and easier to encourage proper bloodflow that will keep you alert etc.

Some people find the prospect of standing quite off putting. I used to work in a lab and wouldn't sit down all day, time would fly by.

I like the setup you have there. Not sure my wife would like me replicating it, but I may give it a go.
