Happens all the time - but it's less of a structured thing and more of an under-the-table handshake. Believe it or not a lot of professional players, esp on some of the pro tours that don't have millions to spend on entries have people that buy a piece of their action to help cover their buy-ins/travel/accommodations.
To break it down simply.
Joe plays a vegas multi-table torny with a buy-in of 20k.
Jane helps Joe by playing 5k of that buy-in, thus buying 25% of Joes tournament winnings, should he get into the money or win.
If Joe loses and busts out before the money, Jane lost 5k, Joe lost 15k.
If Joe gets to the money, Jane gets 25% of whatever Joe wins.
So if, in theory, Joe makes the money and wins 30k, Jane would get 7.5k of that. Her initial 5k, plus 2.5k profit.
The deeper Joe gets, the more money Jane wins aswell. It's basically a gamble on the players skill.
